حدثنا أبو بكر بن إسحاق الفقيه، أخبرنا إسحاق بن الحسن الحَرْبي، حدثنا سُرَيج بن النُّعمان، حدثنا عبد الحميد بن سليمان، عن أبي حازم، عن سَهْل بن سعد قال: كنت أَراه يقدِّم فِتيانًا من فتيانِ قومِه فيصلُّون به، فقلت: أنت صاحبُ رسول الله ﷺ، ولك من الفضل والسابقةِ، تُقدِّمُ هؤلاء الصبيانَ فيصلُّون بك، أفلا تتقدَّمُ فتصلِّيَ لقومك، فقال: إنَّ رسول الله ﷺ قال: "إِنَّ الإمامَ ضامنٌ، فإن أتَمَّ كانت له ولهم، وإن نَقَصَ كان عليه ولا عليهم"، فلا أريدُ أن أتحمَّلَ ذلك (2).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم، ولم يُخرجاه بهذا اللفظ.

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) was seen putting forward the young men of his people to lead the prayer. It was said to him: "You are a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and you have great virtue, yet you pray behind these young men?" He said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The imam is a guarantor (of the prayer). If he completes it, the reward is for him and for them; and if he falls short, the burden is upon him and not upon those following him.' And I do not wish to take that responsibility upon myself."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it with these words.

(2) صحيح لغيره، وهذا إسناد ضعيف لضعف عبد الحميد بن سليمان. أبو حازم: هو سلمة بن دينار الأعرج.
Grading: (2) It is "sahih li-ghayrihi", but this chain is weak because of the weakness of 'Abd al-Hamid bin Sulayman.
Technical note: Abu Hazim is Salamah bin Dinar al-A'raj.
وأخرجه ابن ماجه (981) من طريق سعيد بن سليمان الواسطي، عن عبد الحميد بن سليمان، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (981) narrated it with the chain of Sa'id bin Sulayman al-Wasiti from 'Abd al-Hamid.
