Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8795

It is narrated from Abu Ubaydah: I used to ask people about the hadith of Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was right beside me in Kufah. Then I went to him and said: A hadith has reached me on your authority; narrate it to me yourself. He said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent, I detested him more than I had ever detested anything. So I went to the remotest land of the Arabs, but there too my aversion remained. Then I went to the land of the Romans, and there I felt an aversion even greater than, or more intense than, before. Then I said (to myself): I will certainly go to this man; if he is truthful, I will listen to him, and if he is a liar, he can do me no harm. So I came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are asking about something that is not lawful for you in your religion." I felt as though he (peace and blessings be upon him) had expressed disapproval of something of mine. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said twice: "O Adi bin Hatim, embrace Islam and you will be safe." Adi says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perhaps what is preventing you from accepting Islam is that you see poverty and want among the people around me, and you see that people have united against us." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Have you seen al-Hirah?" I said: I have not seen it, but I know where it is. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon a woman in a howdah will travel alone from al-Hirah without any protector until she performs Tawaf of the House, and soon the treasures of Kisra bin Hurmuz will be opened to us." I asked (in amazement): Kisra bin Hurmuz?! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes! Kisra bin Hurmuz. And the time is also near when a man will go out with his charity but will find no one to accept it." Adi says: I have seen the woman in the howdah travelling alone, and because of the truth of the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) I swear that the third thing too will certainly come to pass, for his (peace and blessings be upon him) word is the truth.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it.

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "al-Bayhaqi".

Details of the narration: This is clarified by the narration of Ibn Hibban, whose wording is: "Accept Islam and you will be safe, for I think (or: I suppose, or as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said) that what prevents you from accepting Islam is …".

Details of the narration: This is clarified by the narration of Ahmad: "And a person will soon seek someone to accept his wealth from him as charity, but will not find anyone."

Grading: Its chain is hasan because of Abu 'Ubaydah (who is the son of Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: He has been corroborated on most of this hadith of his, so the basis of the hadith is sahih.
Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it (30/18260) and (32/19385) from Yazid bin Harun, from Hisham bin Hassan, from Muhammad bin Sirin, from Abu 'Ubaydah, from a man, who said: "I said to 'Adi …"
Technical note / Defect ('illah): So he added an unnamed (mubham) man to the chain, whereas Hammad bin Zayd narrated it from Hisham, with Ahmad (32/1938), without mentioning this man, and that (the narration of Hammad bin Zayd) is the preserved (mahfuz) version.
Reference / Source: Ahmad also recorded it at (18269) and (19378) through 'Abdullah bin 'Awn, from Muhammad bin Sirin, from Ibn Hudhayfah, from 'Adi bin Hatim.
Reference / Source: Ahmad also recorded it at (18268) and (19384), and Ibn Hibban (6679), through Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani, from Muhammad bin Sirin, with it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, Ahmad mentioned the unnamed (mubham) man in his narration.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (3595) recorded something similar through Muhill bin Khalifah, from 'Adi bin Hatim.
