It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hasten to do good deeds before six things (appear): the rising of the sun from its place of setting, the smoke, the Dajjal, the beast that will emerge from the earth (Dabbat al-Ard), the individual death of one of you (and its trial), and the Hour (its general trial)." Imam Muslim used Abdullah bin Rabah as evidence.
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: The hadith is sahih, but in this chain 'Imran bin Dawar al-Qattan has been contradicted.
Technical note: 'Imran is saduq, but he makes errors and contradicts others. The senior and trustworthy students of Qatadah contradicted him and narrated it from Qatadah, from al-Hasan, from Ziyad bin Riyah, from Abu Hurayrah, as will come, and that is the preserved (mahfuz) version.
References: Ahmad (16/10640) recorded it from Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi (who is Sulayman bin Dawud), with this chain. Ahmad (14/8303) and (15/9278) and Muslim (2947) (129) recorded it through Hammam bin Yahya, and Muslim (2947) (129) and Ibn Hibban (6790) through Shu'bah, both of them from Qatadah, from al-Hasan al-Basri, from Ziyad bin Riyah, from Abu Hurayrah.
Grading: This chain is sahih, and it is the preserved (mahfuz) version.
Important point: Al-Hakim's inclusion of it as an addition (istidrak) is an oversight on his part.
Reference: Ahmad also recorded it (14/8446) and (8849), and Muslim (2947) (128), through al-'Ala' bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ya'qub, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a report from Anas bin Malik with Ibn Majah (4056).
Lexical analysis: "Badiru" means: race ahead, hasten.
Lexical and semantic analysis: "Khuwaysah" is the diminutive of "khassah". It is said that it means death, and it is also said that it refers to the preoccupations particular to a person concerning himself and his wealth.
Semantic analysis: "Amr al-'ammah" (the affair of the public) means the Resurrection, or the trials that blind and deafen (people to the truth).
