Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8783

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "What will be your state when a trial envelops you in which the old will grow older and the young will grow up, and the people will adopt it (that trial) as a Sunnah (an established practice), so that whenever any change is made to it, they will say that the Sunnah has been changed?" It was said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman, when will that be? He said: "When your reciters (of the Qur'an) are many but your jurists (those with deep understanding of the religion) are few, your rulers are many but the trustworthy people are few, and when the world is sought through the deeds of the Hereafter."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Textual verification: In the manuscripts it is "لبستم", while what we have established is taken from "Talkhis al-Dhahabi", and it agrees with the sources of the takhrij.

Textual and kunyah verification: In the manuscripts it is "يا أبا عبد الله", which is a corruption; the correction is from "al-Talkhis", and it (Abu 'Abd al-Rahman) is the kunyah of 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).

Textual verification: The text between the square brackets was missing from the manuscripts; we have established it from "al-Talkhis", in agreement with the sources of the takhrij. In some of them (the sources) the wording is "وكثرت أموالكم" (and your wealth becomes abundant) instead of "أمراؤكم" (your rulers), but the mention of rulers is more fitting here; and Allah the Exalted knows best.
