Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8770

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): Musa bin Ulayy bin Rabah says that his father said: I set out intending Hajj, and Sulayman bin Itr, the judge of Egypt, said to me: Convey my greetings of peace to Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah and tell him that this morning I sought forgiveness for him and for his mother. So when I met him and conveyed the message, he said: I too have sought forgiveness for him. Then he asked: In what state did you leave Umm Khannur (that is, Egypt)? I told him of its abundance and prosperity, and he said: Know that it will be the first region on the face of the earth to be ruined, then it will be the turn of Armenia. I asked: Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He replied: No, but Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) told me that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "There will be one emigration after another of the best people of the earth to the place of emigration of Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) (the land of al-Sham), and only the worst people will remain on earth; their lands will cast them out and Allah Almighty will express His aversion to them. Then the Fire will drive them and gather them together with the apes and swine." And I also heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Some people will emerge from the direction of the East who will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats. Whenever one group (qarn) of them comes to an end, another will arise, until the Dajjal appears among the last of them."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, for both of them agreed on accepting the hadiths of Musa bin Ulayy bin Rabah al-Lakhmi, but they did not record it (with these words).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is hasan in corroborations and supporting reports (al-mutaba'at wa al-shawahid) because of 'Abdullah bin Salih al-Misri, the scribe of al-Layth, and the rest of its narrators are acceptable (la ba's bihim).
Note: The hadith has already passed, with both its parts, with the author (al-Hakim) at number (8707) through another chain from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr, which is also acceptable in corroborations and supporting reports; see its full takhrij there.
Reference and details: The first part of the hadith, concerning the story of Sulaym bin 'Itr's greeting and the beginning of the ruin of Egypt and then Armenia, was recorded by Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam in "Futuh Misr" (p. 386) from 'Abdullah bin Salih, with this chain, and in it he made clear that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) heard it from "Ka'b of the Two Books" (meaning Ka'b al-Ahbar);
Technical note: so this part is from the Isra'iliyyat, while the rest of the hadith is from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Details of the narration: Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam also narrated only "the story of the greeting" from Abu al-Aswad al-Nadr bin 'Abd al-Jabbar, from Ibn Lahi'ah, from al-Harith bin Yazid al-Hadrami al-Misri, from 'Ulayy bin Rabah.
Lexical analysis: "Al-rafaghah" and "al-rafaghiyah" (like al-rafahah and al-rafahiyah): meaning abundant prosperity, an easy life, and ampleness.

Technical note (correction): This is what the author (al-Hakim) said, but it is an oversight on his part, for Musa bin 'Ali is among those whom only Muslim narrated from (afrad Muslim); al-Bukhari recorded from him only in his book "al-Adab al-Mufrad", not in his "Sahih".
