Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8769

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to make this supplication: 'Allahumma la yudrikni zamanu - aw la udriku zamana - qawmin la yattabi'una al-'ilm, wa la yastahyuna min al-halim, qulubuhum qulubu al-a'ajim, wa alsinatuhum alsinatu al-'arab.' "O Allah, let me not reach the time - or let the time not reach me - of a people who do not follow knowledge, and who feel no shame before a forbearing (wise) person; their hearts are the hearts of non-Arabs (hard and barren), while their tongues are the tongues of the Arabs."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Textual verification: In the manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "Fitr".

Grading: Its chain is weak because the status of Jamil al-Hadhdha' is unknown and because of a break (inqita') in it, for this Jamil is not known to have heard from any of the Companions. Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the Followers of the Followers in "al-Thiqat" (6/147) and said: "A shaykh who narrates mursal reports." See his biography in Ibn Hajar's "Ta'jil al-Manfa'ah" (149).
Reference: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (7346) through Abu al-Hasan 'Ali bin Muhammad al-Misri, from Yahya bin 'Uthman bin Salih, with this chain.
Note: In it (al-Bayhaqi's narration) the wording is: "لا يتبعون العليم" (they do not follow the All-Knowing), and this is the more fitting reading.
Reference and comparison: Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam narrated it in "Futuh Misr" (p. 461) from 'Uthman bin Salih, from 'Abdullah bin Lahi'ah, from Jamil al-Hadhdha', from Sahl bin Sa'd al-Sa'idi, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Technical note (preference): Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam is more trustworthy and a better memoriser than Yahya bin 'Uthman bin Salih (the narrator of the previous route); and thus the hadith comes back to Ibn Lahi'ah, who had a poor memory (sayyi' al-hifz), and his shaykh Jamil is of unknown status (majhul al-hal), as has already been mentioned.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This narration of Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam is supported by the narration of Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal, who narrated it in his "Musnad" (37/22879) from Hasan bin Musa al-Ashyab, from Ibn Lahi'ah, from Jamil, from Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him).

Name verification: The name occurs like this in the manuscripts, and he is also named this way by Waki' in "Akhbar al-Qudat" (3/221), while in the other sources for his biography his name appears as "Sulaym bin 'Itr". See "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (4/131).

Textual and lexical verification: In the manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "Umm Hanw" or "Umm Khanw". The correction is taken from Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam's "Futuh Misr" (p. 386).
Lexical note: The Arabs call Egypt "Umm Khannur" because of the abundance of good things and blessings in it, and "al-khannur" means blessing. See al-Zabidi's "Taj al-'Arus" (root: kh-n-r).
