It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Hawalah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon you will be divided into several armies: an army in al-Sham, one in Iraq and one in Yemen." I said: O Messenger of Allah, choose one for me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold to al-Sham. Whoever refuses, let him join his Yemen and drink from its pools, for Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has guaranteed for me al-Sham and its people, and taken responsibility for them."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note: Abu Idris al-Khawlani's name is 'A'idh Allah bin 'Abd Allah. Ibn Hibban (7306) narrated it by the route of al-Walid bin Mazyad, from Sa'id bin 'Abd al-'Aziz, with this same chain. Reference and defect: Ahmad (33/20356) narrated it by the route of Muhammad bin Rashid al-Makhuli, from Makhul, from 'Abd Allah bin Hawalah (dropping the link of Abu Idris al-Khawlani), and this is munqati' (broken). Also, (Muhammad bin Rashid) al-Makhuli is "saduq" (truthful), but in trustworthiness he is not of the rank of Sa'id bin 'Abd al-'Aziz. Further references: Ahmad (28/17005) and Abu Dawud (2483) narrated it by the route of Abu Qutaylah; and Ahmad (37/22489) by the route of Sulayman bin Sumayr; both of them from 'Abd Allah bin Hawalah.
