It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him); Abu al-Sha'tha' says: We went out with him and said to him: Give us some counsel. He said: Hold fast to the fear of Allah (taqwa) and to adherence to the community of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), for Allah Almighty will never unite the community of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) upon misguidance. And indeed the religion of Allah is one, so beware of changing colours (being fickle) in the religion of Allah. Adopt taqwa, and be patient until a righteous man finds rest (through death) or rest is found from a wicked man (through his destruction).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. And we have also recorded it as a musnad (marfu') report through a chain that is not sound according to the condition of this book:

Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note: Abu Malik al-Ashja'i is Sa'd bin Tariq, Abu al-Sha'tha' is Sulaym bin Aswad al-Muharibi al-Kufi, and Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari is 'Uqbah bin 'Amr. References: Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated it (15/183) by the route of Nu'aym bin Abi Hind, and (15/207-208) by the route of 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Rufay'; al-Lalaka'i in "Usul al-I'tiqad" (163) by the route of Abu Wa'il Shaqiq bin Salamah; and Ibn Khusraw in "Musnad Abi Hanifah" (618) by the route of Abu 'Amr al-Shaybani. All four of them narrate it from Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari. Technical note: Nu'aym and 'Abd al-'Aziz did not hear from Abu Mas'ud (i.e. the chain is broken). Note: This report will come similarly later in the author's work at no. (8877) by the route of Yusayr bin 'Amr, from Abu Mas'ud. Reference and analysis: Abu al-'Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub al-Asamm narrated it in his "Hadith" (185), and by his route Ibn Mandah in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (p. 260), and al-Khatib in "al-Faqih wa al-Mutafaqqih" (448), from Abu 'Utbah, from Baqiyyah, from Sa'id bin 'Abd al-'Aziz, from Ibn Halbas, from Bashir bin Abi Mas'ud, that he said: "Fear Allah", and he mentioned the report. Technical note: There is weakness in both Abu 'Utbah (whose name is Ahmad bin al-Faraj al-Himsi) and his shaykh Baqiyyah bin al-Walid, and both of them made it a statement of Bashir rather than of his father (Abu Mas'ud), whereas the correct view is that it is a statement of Abu Mas'ud. (396 - 404). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: As for the statement "Allah will not unite the community of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) upon misguidance", similar marfu' reports are narrated from Ibn 'Umar and Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), and both are sahih; they have already passed in the author's work under nos. (396-404).
