Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8754

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the Asr prayer, then after Asr he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to deliver a sermon until the sun set. Whoever remembered it remembered it, and whoever forgot it forgot it. In this sermon he (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us of what would happen until the Day of Resurrection. He (peace and blessings be upon him) praised and extolled Allah Almighty and said: "To proceed: this world is indeed sweet and green, and Allah Almighty is going to make you successors in it and see how you act. Beware! Guard yourselves against (the trials of) the world and women. Listen! The children of Adam have been created in different classes. Among them is one who is born a believer, lives a believer and dies a believer; one who is born a disbeliever, lives a disbeliever and dies a disbeliever; one who is born a believer and lives a believer but whose death is upon disbelief; and one who is born a disbeliever and lives a disbeliever but whose death is upon faith. Listen! Anger is a blazing ember in the interior (the breast) of the son of Adam. Have you not seen the redness of the eyes of an angry person and the swelling of his veins? So when any of you feels something of that state, let him cling to the ground. Listen! The best of men is the one who is slow to anger and quick to be pleased again, and the worst of men is the one who is quick to anger and slow to be pleased again. So if a person is quick to anger and quick to be pleased again, then these two traits offset each other; likewise, if someone is slow to anger and slow to be pleased again, this too is even. Listen! The best of merchants is the one who is good in repaying and gentle in demanding, and the worst of merchants is the one who is bad in repaying and harsh in demanding. So if someone is bad in repaying and bad in demanding, this is even; and if someone is bad in repaying but good in demanding, this too offsets the other. Listen! Let not awe of people prevent a man from speaking the truth when he knows it. Listen! On the Day of Resurrection every covenant-breaker (traitor) will have a banner according to the extent of his treachery, and know that the greatest treachery is the treachery of the leader (ruler) of the general public, and the traitor's banner will be planted by his lower back. Listen! The best jihad is to speak a word of truth before a tyrannical ruler." Then, when the sun was about to set, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Compared to the time that has passed, as much of the world's lifespan remains as remains of this day of yours after what has passed of it."
In narrating this hadith with this wording, Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an al-Qurashi is alone in narrating it from Abu Nadrah, and the two Shaykhs did not use Ali bin Zayd as evidence.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: Explaining the words "fa-innaha biha" (then it is in exchange for it), al-Sindi said in his marginal notes on "Musnad Ahmad": That is, one of the two will be in exchange for the other - as in the narration of al-Tirmidhi - meaning that the one who does them then deserves neither praise nor blame (i.e. the good and the bad become equal).

Grading: Because of the weakness of 'Ali bin Zayd (Ibn Jud'an), its chain is weak, but some of its parts (paragraphs) are sahih.
Narrator identification: Abu Nadrah is al-Mundhir bin Malik bin Qit'ah.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (17/11143) narrated it from Yazid bin Harun and 'Affan, from Hammad bin Salamah, with this same chain. Also, Ahmad (18/11587) narrated it by the route of Ma'mar, and al-Tirmidhi (2191) by the route of Hammad bin Zayd; both of them narrate it from 'Ali bin Zayd.
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is "hasan sahih".
Reference / Source: Its first part - which consists of "al-dunya khadirah" (the world is green) - was narrated by Ibn Majah (4000) by the route of Hammad bin Zayd, from 'Ali bin Zayd.
Reference / Source: And this same part was narrated by Ahmad (17/11169), Muslim (2742), al-Nasa'i (9224) and Ibn Hibban (3221) by the route of Abu Maslamah Sa'id bin Yazid; and by Ahmad (18/11426) and Ibn Hibban (5591) by the route of al-Mustamirr bin al-Rayyan. Both of them (Abu Maslamah and al-Mustamirr) narrate it from Abu Nadrah.
Reference / Source: Its sixth part - which consists of "la yamna'anna rajulan mahabatu al-nas" (let not awe of people prevent a man) - was narrated by Ahmad (18/11678) and Ibn Majah (4007) by the route of Hammad bin Zayd, from 'Ali bin Zayd.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (17/11017, 11403 and 18/11428, 11831, 11869) and Ibn Hibban (275, 278) narrated it by various routes from Abu Nadrah.
Grading: So this (part) is "sahih" by virtue of its routes.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (18/11474) also narrated it by the route of al-Hasan al-Basri, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, with some additional words.
Grading: Its chain is weak (because al-Hasan al-Basri did not hear from him).
Reference / Source: Its seventh part - which consists of "li-kulli ghadirin liwa'" (every betrayer will have a banner) - was narrated by Ahmad (17/11038) from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, and by Ahmad (18/11666) and Ibn Majah (2873) by the route of Hammad bin Zayd. Both of them narrate it from 'Ali bin Zayd.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (17/11303, 18/11427) and Muslim (1738/15, 16) narrated it by two routes from Abu Nadrah, so it is sahih.
Technical note: Ahmad (17/11351) narrated it by the route of 'Atiyyah al-'Awfi, and al-Nasa'i (8682) by the route of al-Hasan al-Basri, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri in abridged form. There is "weakness" in 'Atiyyah, and al-Hasan al-Basri did not hear from Abu Sa'id.
Reference / Source: Its eighth part - which consists of "afdalu al-jihad kalimatu haqq" (the best jihad is a word of truth) - was narrated by Abu Dawud (4344), Ibn Majah (4011) and al-Tirmidhi (2174) by the route of 'Atiyyah al-'Awfi, from Abu Sa'id.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For this report there is the hadith of Tariq bin Shihab as a shahid, which is in Musnad Ahmad (31/18828 and 18830) and Sunan al-Nasa'i (7786).
Technical note: Tariq bin Shihab had the honour of "ru'yah" (having seen the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)), and the chain reaching him is sahih.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Another shahid for this report is the hadith of Abu Umamah, which is in Musnad Ahmad (36/22158) and Ibn Majah (4012).
Grading: Its chain is, Allah willing, hasan.
Important point: So this part (paragraph) is sahih by virtue of its two supporting reports.
Reference: In Musnad Ahmad (18/11796) the first and seventh paragraphs of this report are narrated by the route of al-Hasan al-Basri, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him).
