Reference / Source: It was narrated by 'Abd al-Razzaq (5980, 5981), Ibn Abi Shaybah (10/534, 15/175), al-Bukhari in "Khalq al-Af'al" (367), Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (274), al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (15/158), al-Khara'iti in "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (176), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (8699, 8700), Ibn Battah (5/365-366), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan" (6/289) and "al-Shu'ab" (4891), and al-Wahidi in "al-Wasit" (3/126), by various routes from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Rufay' - in some of them it is abridged. Also, 'Abd al-Razzaq (5980), al-Tabarani (8698) and Ibn Battah (5/366) narrated it by the route of al-Musayyab bin Rafi', from Shaddad bin Ma'qil.
Details of the narration: Its first part (the first thing that will be lost) was narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah (14/102), Ibn Abi al-Dunya (267), al-Khallal in "al-Sunnah" (1391) and al-Tabarani (9754) by the route of Abu al-Za'ra' 'Abd Allah bin Hani', from Ibn Mas'ud.
Grading: Because of Abu al-Za'ra', this chain may possibly reach the level of "hasan", Allah willing, in the context of "corroborating chains and supporting reports".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Its second part was narrated similarly by al-Darimi in his "Musnad" (3386) by the route of Zirr bin Hubaysh, from Ibn Mas'ud, and its chain is "hasan".
Technical note: Something like its first part is also narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as "marfu'". Al-Bukhari narrated it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (2/158), al-Khara'iti in "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (173), Tammam al-Razi in his "Fawa'id" (191) and Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/155), by the route of Musa bin Isma'il al-Tabudhaki, from Tawwab (or Thawwab) bin Hujayl, from Thabit al-Bunani, from Anas, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that: "The first thing you will lose of your religion is the trust (amanah), and the last of it is the prayer."
Grading: Tawwab bin Hujayl is counted among the majhul narrators; no one other than al-Tabudhaki narrated from him, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This hadith is also narrated from 'Umar as "marfu'" (Abu Nu'aym: 2/174), by the route of Hakim bin Nafi', from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, from 'Umar.
Technical note: Hakim bin Nafi' is a narrator about whom there is disagreement (mukhtalaf fihi), and he is not very strong.
