حدثني محمد بن صالح بن هانئ، حدثنا الحسين بن الفضل، حدثنا عفَّان، حدثنا حمّاد بن زيد، عن مُجالِد بن سعيد، عن الشَّعْبي (4)، عن مسروق قال: كنا جلوسًا ليلةً عند عبد الله يُقرِئُنا القرآنَ، فسأله رجل فقال: يا أبا عبد الرحمن، هل سألتُم رسول الله ﷺ كم يَملِكُ هذه الأُمةَ من خليفة؟ فقال عبد الله: ما سألَني عن هذا أحدٌ منذ قَدِمتُ العراقَ قبلَك، قال: سألناه فقال: "اثنا عشرَ، عِدَّةُ نُقباءِ بني إسرائيل" (1). لا يُستَغنى (2) في هذا الكتاب عن الرواية عن مجالدٍ وأقرانِه ﵏.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him); Masruq says: One night we were sitting with him while he was teaching us the Qur'an, when a man asked him: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! Did you ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) how many caliphs this Ummah will have? Sayyiduna Abdullah said: Since I came to Iraq, no one besides you has asked me this question. Then he said: Yes, we asked him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There will be twelve, equal to the number of the leaders (nuqaba') of the Children of Israel."

(4) هكذا في (ب)، وفي (ز) و (ك) و (م): الشعبي عن عامر، بزيادة "عن عامر"، وهو خطأ، فإنَّ الشعبي هو عامر بن شراحيل، والصواب فيه إسقاط لفظ "عن".
Note / Clarification: It is like this in manuscript (B), whereas in manuscripts (Z, K, M) it is "al-Sha'bi 'an 'Amir" (with the addition of the words "'an 'Amir"), and this is a mistake, because al-Sha'bi is 'Amir bin Sharahil himself (both are the same person); so the correct form is to drop the word "'an".
(1) إسناده ضعيف لضعف مجالد بن سعيد.
Grading: Because of the weakness of Mujalid bin Sa'id, its chain is weak.
وأخرجه أحمد 6 / (3781) عن حسن بن موسى الأشيب، عن حماد بن زيد، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (6/3781) narrated it from Hasan bin Musa al-Ashyab, from Hammad bin Zayd, with this same chain.
وأخرجه أيضًا (3859) من طريق أبي عَقيل يحيى بن المتوكل، عن مجالد، به.
Reference / Source: He also narrated it (3859) by the route of Abu 'Aqil Yahya bin al-Mutawakkil, from Mujalid.
