حدثنا علي بن حَمْشَاذَ العَدْل، حدثنا معاذ بن المثنَّى العَنبَري، حدثنا عمرو بن مرزوق، حدثنا عِمران القَطَّان، عن قَتَادة، عن سالم بن أبي الجَعْد، عن مَعْدان بن طَلْحة، عن عمرو البِكَالي، عن عبد الله بن عمرو قال: إِنَّ الله ﷿ جزَّأَ الخلقَ عَشَرةَ أجزاءٍ، فجعل تسعةَ أجزاءٍ الملائكةَ وجزءًا سائرَ الخلق، وجزَّأَ الملائكةَ عشرةَ أجزاءٍ، فجعل تسعةَ أجزاءٍ يُسبِّحون الليلَ والنهارَ لا يَفتُرُون، وجزءًا لرسالتِه، وجزَّأَ الخلقَ عشرةَ أجزاءٍ (1)، فجعل تسعةَ أجزاءٍ يأجوجَ ومأجوجَ وجزءًا سائرَ الخلق. ﴿وَالسَّمَاءِ ذَاتِ الْحُبُكِ﴾ [الذاريات: 7] قال: السماءُ السابعة، والحَرَمُ بحِيالِهِ العَرْشُ (2).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, divided creation into ten parts. He made nine parts the angels and one part all the rest of creation. Then He divided the angels into ten parts: He made nine parts who glorify Him night and day and never tire in the least, while He kept one part for His message (the conveying of His messages). And He divided the (remaining) creation into ten parts: He made nine parts Gog and Magog and one part all the rest of creation. Concerning (the blessed verse) "By the heaven full of pathways" [Surah al-Dhariyat: 7], he said: What is meant by it is the seventh heaven, and the Haram (the Ka'bah) lies directly facing the Throne of Allah.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

(1) زاد هنا في "تلخيص الذهبي" وليس في شيء من نسخنا الخطية: فجعل تسعة أجزاءٍ الجنَّ وجزءًا بني آدم، وجزّأ بني آدم عشرة أجزاء. وهذا الحرف ثابت عند غير المصنف ممَّن خرَّج هذا الخبر.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis" has an addition here that is not in any of our manuscripts: "So He made nine parts jinn and one part the children of Adam, and (then) divided the children of Adam into ten parts." This wording is established with the other hadith scholars, besides the author, who recorded this report.
(2) إسناده حسن من أجل عمران بن داور القطان، وهو متابع.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" on account of "'Imran bin Dawar al-Qattan", and he is corroborated (in this narration).
وأخرجه أبو بكر المرُّوذي في "أخبار الشيوخ وأخلاقهم" (313) من طريق عبد الرحمن بن مهدي، والطبري في "تفسيره" 17/ 13 من طريق عبد الرحمن بن مهدي وأبي داود الطيالسي، كلاهما عن عمران القطان، بهذا الإسناد. وفيه عند المروذي: السماء السادسة، بدل السابعة ولم يرد هذا الحرف عند الطبري.
Reference / Source: Abu Bakr al-Marrudhi narrated it in "Akhbar al-Shuyukh" (313) by way of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi; and al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (17/13) by way of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi and Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi. Both of them narrate it from 'Imran al-Qattan with this same chain.
Details of the narration: With al-Marrudhi it has "the sixth heaven" in place of "the seventh heaven", while with al-Tabari this word does not occur.
وأخرجه يحيى بن سلام في "تفسيره" 1/ 344 عن سعيد بن أبي عروبة، وأبو القاسم بن بشران في "أماليه" (531) - ومن طريقه ابن عساكر في "تاريخ دمشق" 46/ 462 - من طريق شيبان النحوي، كلاهما عن قتادة به. ولم يذكرا آية الذاريات.
Reference / Source: Yahya bin Sallam narrated it in "al-Tafsir" (1/344) from Sa'id bin Abi 'Arubah; and Abu al-Qasim bin Bishran in "al-Amali" (531) (and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (46/462)) by way of Shayban al-Nahwi. Both of them (Sa'id and Shayban) narrate it from Qatadah with this same chain. Neither of them mentioned the verse of (Surah) al-Dhariyat.
