Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8717

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I know better than he does what the Dajjal will have with him. He will have two rivers with him: one of them will appear to the eye of the beholder as blazing fire, and the other as white water. Whoever among you encounters him should close his eyes and drink from the one he sees as fire, for it is in reality cool water. And beware of the other, for it is the tribulation. And know that between his two eyes is written 'Kafir' (disbeliever), which everyone who can write and who cannot write (the unlettered) will read. And indeed one of his eyes is wiped out (blind), with a lump of flesh (zafarah) over it. He will appear in the last part of his time in the valley of the Jordan, on the mountain pass of Afiq, and every person who believes in Allah and the Last Day will be in the valley of the Jordan. He will kill a third of the Muslims, defeat a third, and a third will remain. Night will fall upon them, and some of the believers will say to one another: 'What are you waiting for, that you do not join your (martyred) brothers in seeking the pleasure of your Lord? Whoever has surplus food should give it to his brother, and when dawn breaks, pray, and offer the prayer early, then face your enemy.'" So when they stand up to pray, Sayyiduna Isa ibn Maryam (Allah's blessings be upon him) will descend (from the heaven) in front of them and lead them in prayer. When he finishes the prayer, he will say (gesturing): "Move out of the way between me and the enemy of Allah (the Dajjal)." - Abu Hazim says that Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then he will melt just as fat melts in the sun; and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: As salt melts in water. - And Allah will give the Muslims power over them, and they will kill them, until the tree and the stone will call out: "O servant of Allah! O servant of the Most Merciful! O Muslim! This is a Jew (hiding behind me), so kill him." So Allah will annihilate them, and the Muslims will prevail; they will break the cross, kill the swine, and abolish the jizyah. While they are in this state, Allah Almighty will bring out Gog and Magog. Their first group will drink up all the water (of the Lake of Tiberias), and their last group will come and find it dry, and they will not leave a single drop in it. They will say: "We have prevailed over our enemies; there used to be a trace of water here." Then the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions will come behind them until they enter one of the cities of Palestine called "Ludd." They (Gog and Magog) will say: "We have prevailed over the people of the earth; come, let us now fight the people of the heavens." At that time the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will supplicate to Allah, and Allah will create a sore (qarhah) in their throats, from which not a single one of them will survive. Then the stench of (their corpses) will harm the Muslims, so Sayyiduna Isa (Allah's blessings be upon him) will supplicate against them, and Allah will send a wind upon them that will cast them all into the sea.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis" has "ويبقى ثلث" (and a third will remain), and this is more fitting (awjah). It was the same in manuscript (B), but then an "alif" was added to it, so it became "ثلثًا".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "Abu Harimah"; the correction is from al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis".

Grading: Its chain is "hasan" on account of "Khalaf bin Khalifah", but al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir said in "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah" (19/216): "It contains a strange narrative and objectionable (munkar) things, and Allah knows best."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Identification of the narrators: "Abu Malik al-Ashja'i" refers to Sa'd bin Tariq, and "Abu Hazim al-Ashja'i" refers to Salman.
Reference / Source: Ibn Mandah narrated it in "al-Iman" (1033) by way of Ahmad bin Mahdi, from Sa'id bin Sulayman al-Wasiti, with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Except that he dropped "Abu Hazim" from it (did not mention him); and (in any case) the narration of Abu Malik al-Ashja'i from Rib'i bin Hirash is well known and famous.
Reference / Source: Its opening part, up to the words "عليها ظفرة", was narrated by Ahmad (38/23279) and Muslim (2934) (105) by way of Yazid bin Harun, from Abu Malik al-Ashja'i, from Rib'i, from Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him). He did not mention Abu Hazim in it.
Details of the narration: The story in it of the two rivers (of fire and of cold water) was narrated by Ahmad (23338) and Abu Dawud (4315) by way of Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir; by Ahmad (23353), al-Bukhari (3450) and Muslim (2934) (106 and 107) by way of 'Abd al-Malik bin 'Umayr; and by Muslim (2934) (108) and Ibn Hibban (6799) by way of Nu'aym bin Abi Hind. All three of them (Mansur, 'Abd al-Malik, Nu'aym) narrate it from Rib'i bin Hirash with this same chain.
