أخبرنا أبو الحسين أحمد بن عثمان الأَدَمي، حدثنا أبو قِلَابة، حدثنا سهل بن حمّاد، أخبرنا هشام بن أبي عبد الله، عن يحيى بن أبي كَثير، عن محمد بن إبراهيم التَّيْمي، عن خالد بن مَعْدان، عن العِرْباض بن سارِيَة قال: كان رسول الله ﷺ يستغفرُ للصفِّ المقدَّمِ ثلاثًا وللثاني مرَّةً (2).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، وقد اتَّفقا على الاحتجاج برواية غيرِ الصحابي - على ما تقدَّم ذِكري له - من أفراد التابعين (1).

Sayyiduna al-Irbad bin Sariyah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek forgiveness for the first row three times and for the second row once.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, and the two Shaykhs used as evidence such narrations of Tabi'in who are the only ones to narrate them.

(2) حديث صحيح، وهذا إسناد منقطع، خالد بن معدان إنما يرويه عن العرباض بواسطة جُبير بن نُفير كما سيأتي.
Grading: (2) The hadith is sahih, but this chain is "munqati'"; Khalid bin Ma'dan narrates it from al-'Irbad through "Jubayr bin Nufayr", as will come later.
وأخرجه أحمد 28/ (17141) و (17148)، وابن ماجه (996) من طرق عن هشام، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (28/17141 etc.) and Ibn Majah (996) narrated it through various routes from Hisham with this same chain.
وأخرجه أحمد (17156)، وابن حبان (2158) و (2159) من طريق شيبان النحوي، عن يحيى بن أبي كثير، عن محمد بن إبراهيم، عن خالد بن معدان حدثه، أنَّ جبير بن نفير حدَّثه، ¤ ¤ أنَّ العرباض حدَّثه. وهذا إسناد متصل صحيح.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (17156) and Ibn Hibban (2158) narrated it with the chain of Shayban al-Nahwi from Yahya bin Abi Kathir, in which Khalid bin Ma'dan said: Jubayr bin Nufayr narrated to me, and al-'Irbad narrated to him.
Grading: And this chain is muttasil and sahih.
وأخرجه كذلك متصلًا أحمد أيضًا (17157) و (17162)، والنسائي (893) من طريق بَحِير بن سعد، عن خالد بن معدان، به.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (17157) and al-Nasa'i (893) also narrated it with a connected chain through Bahir bin Sa'd from Khalid bin Ma'dan.

(1) يعني: ما تفرَّد بروايته تابعيٌّ ولم يتابعه عليه غيره، وقد تقدَّم بإثر الحديث (94) قوله: ومن شرطنا في هذا الكتاب أنا نخرِّج أفراد الثقات إذا لم نجد لها عِلَّة. قلنا: وهو يشير بقوله هنا إلى أنَّ حديث العرباض هذا تفرد بروايته خالد بن مَعْدان.
Technical note: (1) That is, a narration which a single Tabi'i narrates alone without any corroboration; after number (94) the author (al-Hakim) stated his condition that we record the "afrad" (solitary narrations) of trustworthy narrators provided there is no defect. Here he is indicating that Khalid bin Ma'dan is alone in narrating this hadith.
