Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The (underlying) report from 'Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) is sahih, but this chain is weak because of the weakness of Ahmad bin Rishdin al-Misri and the unknown status of Ibrahim bin Mansur al-Khurasani, for we could not find a biography of Ibrahim.
Reference / Source: This narration is found in "Fawa'id al-Khuldi" (edited by Nabil Jarrar) under number (216).
Details of the narration: Al-Tabarani also narrated it from Ahmad bin Rishdin in "al-Kabir" (14884) (and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (57/272)), but there he made it a narration from Yahya bin Sulayman al-Ju'fi, from Muhammad bin Fudayl, from 'Abdullah bin Shubrumah, from al-Sha'bi, from Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is part of Ibn Rishdin's idtirab (inconsistency); and Yahya al-Ju'fi is not that strong either, and munkar reports are found among his narrations.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it once more (14882) (and by way of him al-Diya' in "al-Mukhtarah" (9/268) and Ibn 'Asakir (57/271)) from Ahmad bin Yahya bin Khalid al-Raqqi, from Yahya bin Sulayman al-Ju'fi, from Muhammad bin Fudayl and Ahmad bin Bashir, from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, from al-Sha'bi, from Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tabarani's shaykh (Ahmad bin Yahya) is majhul al-hal (of unknown standing).
Important point: But this report is "preserved" from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid.
Details of the narration: For it was narrated from him (Isma'il) through Muhammad bin Fudayl by 'Ali bin al-Mundhir, in al-Bazzar's "Musnad" right after hadith number (2197), and by Ibn 'Asakir (57/271).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah also narrated it from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, which is found in the Musnad of Ahmad (26/16128), the Musnad of al-Bazzar (2197) and al-Diya''s "al-Mukhtarah" (270), and all its narrators are thiqah.
Details of the narration: The hadith of Muhammad bin Suqah has also been narrated as marfu', explicitly as a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The offspring of al-Hakam are accursed." Ibn 'Asakir (57/271) narrated it by way of Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Hamdun, from Abu 'Uthman Sa'id bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Safwan al-Misri, from Shu'ayb bin al-Layth, from his father, from Ya'qub bin Ibrahim, from Muhammad bin Suqah, from al-Sha'bi, from Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator "Sa'id bin 'Abd al-Rahman" is majhul; we could not find a biography of him.
Reference / Source: The origin of the story of the cursing of al-Hakam bin Abi al-'As is the narration from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) in the Musnad of Ahmad (11/6520). He said: We were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and 'Amr bin al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) had gone to put on his clothes in order to join me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, while we were with him: "An accursed man will now enter upon you." 'Abdullah said: By Allah, I remained fearful, watching everyone coming in and going out, until so-and-so entered, meaning al-Hakam (bin Abi al-'As).
Important point: So this is the actual origin of the story, and it contains no mention of cursing the offspring of al-Hakam or the descendants in his loins. It is not part of the character or the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to curse someone who does not deserve cursing, such as young children or descendants still in the loins. Most likely the enmity that existed between 'Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Banu Umayyah led him to this laxity in mentioning the offspring of al-Hakam in the story of the cursing. And Allah Most High knows best.
