Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8688

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When Banu Abi al-As (their men) reach thirty in number, they will make the wealth of Allah something circulated (among themselves), the servants of Allah their slaves, and the religion of Allah a means of deception." Hallam said: (The people of that time) rejected this statement of Sayyiduna Abu Dharr, so Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) bore witness, saying: Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "There is no one under the shade of the sky or upon the earth more truthful in speech than Abu Dharr." And I bear witness that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said this (regarding Banu Abi al-As).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. Its supporting report (shahid) is the hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts it ("Jadhl") is with "dhal", while in al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (3/129) and Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (3/308) it is "Jazl" (with za'). In al-Bukhari's "Tarikh" the name is written "Hallab" (with ba' at the end), which Ibn Abi Hatim declared an error in his book "Bayan Khata' al-Bukhari fi Tarikhihi" (114).

Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although several people narrated from "Ja'far bin Muhammad", we could not find a biography of him that would make his standing clear, so he is "majhul al-hal" (of unknown standing). "Sharik bin 'Abdullah" (who is al-Nakha'i) is sayyi' al-hifz (of poor memory). And "Hallam" is one of the senior Tabi'un; two narrators took narrations from him, but no criticism or commendation of him is transmitted.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Khaythamah narrated it in the second volume of his "Tarikh" (3837); he said: "It reached me from Ishaq bin Yusuf al-Azraq", then he mentioned it, but he did not relate its second half.
Note / Clarification: For this, see the earlier narrations numbers (8684) and (8685).
Details of the narration: The second half of Hallam's hadith, which is from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) on the virtue of Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), was narrated by Bahshal in "Tarikh Wasit" (p. 141) and al-Tahawi in "Mushkil al-Athar" (532) by way of Ja'far bin Muhammad, from his grandfather Ishaq bin Yusuf al-Azraq, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "Hilyat al-Awliya'" (4/172) by way of Bishr bin Mihran, from Sharik, from al-A'mash, from Zayd (Ibn Wahb), from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for this narrator "Bishr" (also called Bashir), Imam Abu Hatim al-Razi heard hadith from him, then abandoned his hadith and instructed his son, as stated in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (2/379), not to read his hadith to him.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Supporting reports for this half have already passed with the author: under number (8670) from the hadith of Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) himself, under number (8671) from the hadith of 'Abdullah bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), and under number (8678) from the hadith of Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him).
Grading: Therefore this hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi".
Note / Clarification: The saying: "They will take the wealth of Allah as their own preserve (دُولًا)". "دُولًا" is the plural of "dūlah". It means: they will keep circulating the wealth among themselves and leave no share in it for others, or the nobles (elite) will seize for themselves the rights of the poor from the public treasury. This was said by al-Sindi in his marginal notes on the "Musnad of Ahmad".
Note / Clarification: The explanation of the remaining words of this hadith has passed shortly before.
