Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain too is weak, like the previous chain.
Reference / Source: This narration is found in Nu'aym bin Hammad's book "al-Fitan" under number (314) with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (1451) from Ahmad bin 'Abd al-Wahhab bin Najdah, from Abu al-Mughirah 'Abd al-Quddus alone, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: This narration will come later under number (8688) by way of Shaqiq bin Salamah, from Hallam bin Jadhl, from Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him), with the wording: "When Banu Abi al-'As reach (the number of) thirty men".
Grading: Its chain is weak.
Details of the narration: On this topic there is also a narration from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), which will come later with the author under numbers (8689) and (8690); its wording is likewise: "When Banu Abi al-'As reach thirty men".
Grading: Its chain too is weak.
Reference / Source: This narration from Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) is found in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (12982) and (19/897), and in al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/507-508); and by way of both of them Ibn 'Asakir recorded it in "Tarikh Dimashq" (37/126 and 252). It is narrated by two routes from 'Abdullah bin Lahi'ah, from Abu Qabil al-Ma'afiri, from 'Abdullah bin Mawhab, from Mu'awiyah, as marfu', with the wording: "When Banu al-Hakam reach (the number of) thirty".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tabarani's chain up to "Ibn Lahi'ah" is weak, while al-Bayhaqi's chain up to him is strong; but "Ibn Lahi'ah" himself is weak and of poor memory (sayyi' al-hifz), and his shaykh "Abu Qabil", despite being thiqah, narrates munkar reports.
Important point: Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir, after mentioning it in "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah" (9/268-269), said: "This hadith contains strangeness and severe objectionability (nakarah), and Ibn Lahi'ah is weak."
Details of the narration: The hadith of Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) also has another chain within a different story, narrated by Ibn Abi Khaythamah in the second volume (safar) of his "Tarikh" under number (3833), and by Ibn 'Asakir (46/297 and 69/155-156), by way of Mus'ab bin 'Abdullah al-Zubayri, from 'Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Yahya bin 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr (or someone else), and he mentioned a story in which this hadith of Mu'awiyah occurs.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): "'Abdullah bin Muhammad" (in this chain) is matruk al-hadith (abandoned in hadith).
Important point: The most authentic thing on this topic is the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Tammam in "al-Fawa'id" (347) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Dala'il" (6/507) by way of Sulayman bin Bilal; by Ibn Abi Khaythamah (3836) by way of 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Abi Hazim; and by Abu Ya'la in "al-Musnad" (6523), Ibn Khuzaymah in "Hadith 'Ali bin Hujr" (284), al-Khattabi in "Gharib al-Hadith" (2/436) and Ibn 'Asakir (57/254) by way of Isma'il bin Ja'far. All three of them (Sulayman, 'Abd al-'Aziz, Isma'il) narrate it from al-'Ala' bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ya'qub, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Sulayman and 'Abd al-'Aziz narrated it as marfu', while Isma'il bin Ja'far narrated it as mawquf.
Details of the narration: The wording of Sulayman and Isma'il is: "When Banu Abi al-'As reach thirty men", while the wording of 'Abd al-'Aziz is: "When the offspring of al-Hakam reach thirty".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is idtirab (inconsistency) in its chain and text. There is no problem with "al-'Ala' bin 'Abd al-Rahman", except that some of his narrations are munkar. The heart inclines more to the view that the mawquf narration of Isma'il bin Ja'far is the "preserved" one, because he is a thiqah and meticulous (mutathabbit) narrator. And Allah knows best.
Note / Clarification: "الخَوَل": (this refers to) people who are made to serve by way of force and humiliation (i.e. slaves); it is the plural of "khā'il".
Note / Clarification: "النُّحْل": a gift given freely without any compensation. Al-Khattabi says: what is meant is that they (the rulers) will distribute wealth not on the basis of entitlement, but on the basis of their own preference (favouritism) and whim.
Note / Clarification: "الدَّغَل" (and likewise "الدَّخَل"): it means deception and corruption. Its root sense is to insert into a matter something that does not belong to it. It is said: "أَدخل الرجلُ في أمره وأدغَل" (both have the same meaning). According to al-Khattabi: what is meant is that they will introduce things into the religion and invent rulings for which there is no precedent in the Sunnah (i.e. innovations).
