Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8684

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When Banu Umayyah (their rulers) reach forty in number, they will take the servants of Allah as their slaves, the wealth of Allah as their estate, and the Book of Allah as a means of deception."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The cause of weakness is Abu Bakr bin Abi Maryam, who had suffered from ikhtilat (memory deterioration); also there is a break (inqita') between Rashid bin Sa'd and Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), for Rashid did not reach the time of Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him). Baqiyyah bin al-Walid (though there is criticism of him) is corroborated in the next narration.
Reference / Source: Al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis": "Besides the weakness of its narrators, it is also munqati'."
