Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8682

It is narrated from Abu Nadrah that he said: We came to Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) on the day of Jumu'ah to compare our copy of the Qur'an with his copy. When the time of the Jumu'ah prayer came, he instructed us, so we took a ritual bath, applied perfume and went to the mosque. We sat with a man who was narrating, then Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) came, so we moved over to him. There he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The Muslims will have three cities: one at the meeting place of the two seas, one in al-Jazirah, and one in al-Sham. Then the people will be struck by three alarms, and the Dajjal will come out with a large army and defeat those on the side of the east. The first city he will reach is the one at the meeting place of the two seas, and its inhabitants will split into three groups: one group will stay there, intending to test him closely, one group will join the Bedouins, and one group will go to the next city beyond them. Then he will come to al-Sham, and the Muslims will withdraw to the pass of Afiq. They will send out their livestock to graze, and it will be destroyed. This will be a very hard time for them, and they will be afflicted with such severe hunger and hardship that one of them will burn his bowstring and eat it. While they are in this state, a caller will call out at the time of suhur: O people! Help has come to you. They will say to one another: This is the voice of a man who is well-fed. Then Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him) will descend at the time of the Fajr prayer, and the imam of the people will say to him: O Spirit of Allah! Come forward and lead us in prayer. He will reply: 'Innakum ma'shara hadhihil-ummati umara'u ba'dukum 'ala ba'd, taqaddam anta fa-salli bina' (You people of this Ummah are leaders over one another, so you come forward and lead us in prayer). So that imam will come forward and lead them in prayer. When they finish, Isa (peace be upon him) will take his spear and head towards the Dajjal. When he sees him, he will begin to melt as lead melts. Isa (peace be upon him) will strike his chest with his spear and kill him. Then his army will be defeated, and on that day nothing will give shelter to any of them, until even the stone will speak out: O believer! This is a disbeliever, so kill him; and the stone will say: This is a disbeliever, so kill him."
This hadith, with the mention of Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani, has a sahih (authentic) chain on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "Hakim".

Details of the narration: In some sources the wording is: "ومصر بالحيرة" (and a city at al-Hirah).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The manuscripts have "عراض" (without alif); we have established it with alif ("أعراض") in light of the sources of takhrij. "الأعراض" is the plural of "عَرْض", which means an army.
Note / Clarification: Some sources have the words "في أعراض الناس", meaning: "among the common people".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The manuscripts have "فإذا", while the text established here is taken from al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis".

Note / Clarification: (Meaning of the Arabic word) That is: we will test him and see what he has.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The mention of the "second city" has dropped out of the author's (al-Hakim's) narration, while it is mentioned by other hadith scholars. (According to the narration) the people of this second city will also split into three groups, like the people of the first city.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "ليجر"; the correction is from al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Manuscripts (Z), (K) and (B) have the word "أم", while "al-Talkhis" has "أمير". We have retained the text of manuscript (M).

Note / Clarification: The text between the square brackets is not in our manuscripts; we have added it from al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis".

Details of the narration: In the sources of takhrij, at this place the word "الشجرة" (the tree) occurs in place of "الحجر" (the stone).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): This phrase, "والحجر يقول" (and the stone will say), is present in manuscripts (Z) and (K), and is repeated twice in (K), while it has dropped out of manuscripts (M) and (B).

Grading: Its chain is weak because of the weakness of "'Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for the mention of Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani in this chain, it is a muddle (takhlit) of Sa'id bin Hubayrah, for Sa'id is not a strong narrator, as Abu Hatim al-Razi said; Ibn Hibban accused him of fabrication, and al-Dhahabi declared him feeble in his "al-Talkhis".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (29/17900) from Yazid bin Harun and (17901) from 'Affan bin Muslim, both of them from Hammad bin Salamah, from 'Ali bin Zayd alone, from Abu Nadrah (al-Mundhir bin Malik al-'Abdi). See also the next narration.
