Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8654

It is narrated from Abd al-Aziz, the nephew of Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), that Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The first thing of your religion that you will lose is humility (khushu'), and the last thing of your religion that you will lose is the prayer. The handholds of Islam will certainly be broken one by one, to the point that women will pray even while menstruating. You will certainly follow the path of those before you exactly, as one feather (of an arrow) matches another and as one sandal matches another; you will not stray from their path, nor will you be diverted from it, until only two sects remain out of many sects. One of them will say: 'What is the matter with these five prayers! Those before us surely went astray; Allah Almighty has only said: "And establish the prayer at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night." [Surah Hud: 114]' So they will pray only three prayers. And the other sect will say: 'We believe in Allah just as the angels believe; there is neither a disbeliever nor a hypocrite among us.' So it is a right upon Allah that He gather both of these (misguided sects) with the Dajjal."
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts it is written "la takhta'u" (in the form of a prohibition), which is an error.

Grading: Its chain is "da'if" (weak) due to the jahalah (being unknown) of "Humayd Abu 'Abd Allah al-Filastini". Ibn Hibban in "al-Thiqat" (6/ 191) named this narrator who narrates from 'Abd al-'Aziz as "Humayd bin Ziyad al-Yamami"! Likewise, no one narrated from "'Abd al-'Aziz, the nephew of Hudhayfah" (some say Hudhayfah's brother) except two unknown narrators, and al-Dhahabi said in "al-Mizan": "He is not known."
Reference / Source: Ibn Waddah narrated it in "al-Bida' wa-l-Nahy 'anha" (155), al-Tabari in "Tahdhib al-Athar" (Musnad Ibn 'Abbas, 2/ 672), al-Dulabi in "al-Kuna wa-l-Asma'" (1420) and Ibn Battah in "al-Ibanah" (2/ 109), via various routes from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi with this same chain (with some of them it is abridged). In al-Dulabi's "al-Kuna" the name of this Abu 'Abd Allah al-Filastini is given as "Junayd".
Reference / Source: Abu Bakr al-Khallal narrated it in "al-Sunnah" (1292) and Ibn Battah (1/ 174-175 and 2/ 571-572) via the route of 'Abd al-Malik bin 'Amr (Abu 'Amir al-'Aqadi) from 'Ikrimah bin 'Ammar, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Its first part (about the first and last thing this Ummah will lose) was narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah (13/ 381), Ahmad in "al-Zuhd" (1003) and Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 281), via the route of Waki' from 'Ikrimah bin 'Ammar. See also the report of Ibn Mas'ud which will come with the author later at no. (8749).
Reference / Source: Abu 'Amr al-Dani narrated it with the long text in "al-Sunan al-Waridah fi al-Fitan" (271) via the route of Layth bin Abi Sulaym, from Ibn Husayn, from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Filastini, who said: I heard Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman saying …
Grading: This chain is "da'if" (weak); Layth is weak and has a poor memory, and this Ibn Husayn is unknown to us.
Reference / Source: Al-Ajurri narrated it in "al-Shari'ah" (35) - and via his route al-Dani (225, 274) - via Hisham bin 'Ammar, from 'Abd al-Hamid bin Habib, from al-Awza'i, from Yunus bin Yazid, from al-Zuhri, from al-Sunabihi, from Hudhayfah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The outward appearance of this chain is "hasan", but it is "ma'lul" (defective). For al-Dani (273) narrated it, in part, with a strong chain via Musa bin A'yan, from al-Awza'i, from "a man from the people of the Hijaz", from al-Sunabihi, from Hudhayfah. Musa bin A'yan is more trustworthy and more precise than 'Abd al-Hamid bin Habib, and he made clear in his narration that the intermediary between al-Awza'i and al-Sunabihi is "unnamed" and unknown.

Note / Clarification: "Al-quddah" is the singular of qudhadh, and it refers to the feathers of an arrow (i.e. exactly alike).
