Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8648

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul! The Hour will not be established until beasts of prey speak to human beings, and until the tip of a man's whip ('adhabat sawtih) and the strap of his sandal (shirak na'lih) speak to him, and (the strap) informs him of everything that his family did after he left."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (K) and (M) this name was corrupted into "Hafs".

Grading: Its chain is "sahih". Abu Nadrah al-'Abdi is "al-Mundhir bin Malik bin Qut'ah".
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (2181) narrated it via Sufyan bin Waki', from his father, with this same chain, and said: this hadith is "hasan sahih".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (18/ 11792) narrated it from Yazid bin Harun, and Ibn Hibban (6494) via the route of Hudbah bin Khalid, both of them from al-Qasim bin al-Fadl, with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this narration Hudbah added the intermediary "Sa'id al-Jurayri" between al-Qasim and Abu Nadrah, which is a "shadh" (unpreserved) addition. In both these sources, at the beginning of the hadith there is the story of the shepherd and the wolf, which will also come with the author later at no. (8650) via the route of Waki'.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (11841) narrated both of them (both stories) via the route of 'Abd Allah bin Abi Husayn, from Shahr bin Hawshab, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri.
Grading: There is criticism about Shahr bin Hawshab, but he has been corroborated in this hadith, and all the narrators below him are trustworthy.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Shu'bah had a doubt regarding al-Qasim bin al-Fadl's narration of this hadith, thinking that perhaps he narrated it from Shahr bin Hawshab. Al-'Uqayli narrated in "al-Du'afa'" (1479) with his chain from Muslim bin Ibrahim al-Farahidi, who said: I was with al-Qasim bin al-Fadl when Shu'bah came to him and asked him about the hadith of Abu Nadrah from Abu Sa'id from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in which it says: "While a shepherd was driving his goats, a wolf attacked a goat.". Al-Qasim narrated that hadith to him. The narrator said: Shu'bah said to him: "Perhaps you heard it from Shahr bin Hawshab?" He said: "No, Abu Nadrah narrated it to us from Abu Sa'id." Shu'bah said (again): "No, perhaps you heard it from Shahr bin Hawshab?" He said (again): "No, Abu Nadrah narrated it to us from Abu Sa'id." The narrator said: al-Qasim did not fall silent until Shu'bah fell silent. We (the editors) say: al-Qasim's insistence on what he narrated - and he is saduq and among the trustworthy people - is proof that this hadith is established from Abu Nadrah from Abu Sa'id, and Allah the Exalted knows best.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Shahr bin Hawshab narrated this same hadith, with both its parts, on another occasion from Abu Hurayrah, which Ahmad (13/ 8063) and others reported. This is evidence of Shahr bin Hawshab's "idtirab" (inconsistency) and poor memory.
