Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8641

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "The trial that strikes like heated stones (al-radf) has come to you; the black and dark trial has come to you. Indeed, the trial has periods of pause and periods of surging. So whoever among you is able to die during its periods of pause, let him do so."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word was corrupted and written as "bi-l-rashf"; the correct word is taken from "Talkhis al-Dhahabi". "Al-radf" (its singular is radfah) refers to stones heated on fire. Ibn al-Athir mentioned this hadith of Hudhayfah in "al-Nihayah" and said: i.e. in its severity and heat this trial will be as if it were hurling heated stones.

Grading: This report is "sahih". Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Awramah (although he is not known) is not alone in it. The second part of this hadith has already passed with this same chain with the author at no. (8538).
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym narrated its first part in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 273) via Qutaybah bin Sa'id, from Jarir bin 'Abd al-Hamid, from al-A'mash, with this same chain from Hudhayfah, in these words: "Trials have come to you hurling 'nashaf', then trials came hurling 'radf', then there came to you a pitch-black darkness." Its chain is "sahih".
Note / Clarification: Ibn al-Athir says in "al-Nihayah": "Al-nashaf" are black stones (pumice) that look as if they had been burnt; if they are placed on water they float and do not sink. He mentioned the hadith of Hudhayfah and said: its meaning is that the first trials, due to their lightness, will not have a (deep) effect on people's religion (like a light stone), and the trials after them will be like heavy stones heated on fire (radf), which will have a greater effect on their religion and wound their bodies more.
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir narrated it with both its parts in "Tarikh Dimashq" (39/ 478-479), within a long story from the time of the trial of the killing of 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him); this narration is via the route of Jarir bin Hazim, from al-Salt bin Bahram, from Zayd bin Wahb.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih". A narration like it will come later at (8833) via the route of 'Imran al-Khayyat from Zayd bin Wahb.
