It is narrated from Ibn Abi Mulaykah (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: One day I went early in the morning to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he said: "I could not sleep last night until morning." I asked: "Why?" He said: "People said that a comet has appeared, so I feared that the Smoke (a sign of the Hour) might have arrived."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it in their books; however, it goes against the position of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), according to whom the sign of the Smoke has already passed.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Jurayj (who is 'Abd al-Malik bin 'Abd al-'Aziz) explicitly stated his hearing from Ibn Abi Mulaykah in sources other than the author (al-Hakim). 'Uthman bin 'Umar is "Ibn Faris al-'Abdi" and Ibn Abi Mulaykah is "'Abd Allah bin 'Ubayd Allah bin Abi Mulaykah". Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated it in his "Tafsir" (2/ 206) from Ibn Jurayj, who said: "Ibn Abi Mulaykah informed me, or I heard him saying ...." Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabari narrated it in his "Tafsir" (25/ 113), and via his route al-Tha'labi in his "Tafsir" (8/ 351), via Isma'il Ibn 'Ulayyah from Ibn Jurayj, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Abu 'Arubah al-Harrani narrated it (as found in the selection from his book "al-Tabaqat", page 66), and Abu Musa al-Madini in "al-Lata'if min Daqa'iq al-Ma'arif" (32), via the route of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, from 'Ubayd Allah bin Abi Yazid, from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, with this same chain.
Details of the narration: This content has been narrated from him (Ibn Mas'ud) in al-Bukhari (1007, 4820) and Muslim (2798) via Masruq.
