Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8622

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Soon a time will come when a person's best wealth will be sheep grazing on the tops of the hills between Makkah and Madinah, eating the leaves of thorny shrubs and basham trees. Their owner will eat of their meat and drink of their milk, while in the great settlements of the Arabs, trials will be convulsing." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times, then said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul! That one of you should have three hundred sheep whose meat he eats and whose milk he drinks would be dearer to him than these pillars of yours made of gold and silver."
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name was corrupted and written as "Hakim"; attention has been drawn to this repeatedly before.

Note / Clarification: The text is like this in the manuscripts, and its meaning is: those people drew together so closely as if they were a single man. Whereas in al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis" the word "ka-l-raha" (like a millstone) occurs, meaning that they formed a ring around him like a round millstone.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the book "Ithaf al-Maharah" (6767) the text is like this, and this is the closest to being correct, whereas in the manuscripts there is a strange wording: "shatayn makkiyyah madaniyyah" (two goats, Makkan and Madinan)!

Grading: Its chain is "da'if" (weak). The narrator Sa'id bin Hubayrah is not strong, as Abu Hatim al-Razi said; he narrates ghara'ib (odd reports), and Ibn Hibban in "al-Majruhin" accused him of fabricating hadith.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Tayyah is "Yazid bin Humayd al-Duba'i" and Abu Raja' al-'Utaridi is "'Imran bin Milhan".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: What makes this weak hadith unnecessary (as a substitute) is the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri found in al-Bukhari (19) and elsewhere. He said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon the best wealth of a Muslim will be goats that he follows to the mountain tops (sha'af al-jibal) and the places where rain falls, fleeing with his religion from the trials."
Note / Clarification: (Linguistic explanation): "al-ziraab" means small mountains. "al-qatad" is a thorny tree. "al-basham" is a fragrant tree used for making miswak (tooth-sticks). "Jara'thim al-'Arab" means the roots and foundation of the Arabs, because "al-jurthumah" means root (origin).
Note / Clarification: The phrase "tartahish fiha al-fitan" (which is also narrated with sin as "tartahis") means: trial will become turbulent (intense) among them and they will fight and kill one another.
