Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8620

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: "A fire will be sent forth which will drive the people from the east of the earth to its west, just as an exhausted camel is driven. Whoever lags behind, this fire will seize him. When the people stop to rest at midday, it will also halt, and when they stop to spend the night, it will also stop."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Hadith Grading

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word has been corrupted and written with an "undotted 'ayn" (the 'ayn without a dot) and a "ra'".

Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to supporting reports), but the chain under discussion is weak due to "inqita'" (a break in the chain).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Qatadah's hearing from al-Muhallab is not established; between the two of them in this chain there is the intermediary "'Umar bin Sayf", as found in "Mashyakhat Ibrahim bin Tahman" (61). A detailed explanation of this will come later at hadith no. (8861). This 'Umar bin Sayf is a narrator from whom only Qatadah narrates, so he is "majhul" (unknown); (surprisingly) Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat"!
Details of the narration: Ma'mar narrated it similarly from Qatadah, which will come later at no. (8707) via the route of Shahr bin Hawshab from 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr, and he narrated it as "marfu'". See the rest of its takhrij and the technical discussion on it there.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Among the marfu' reports, it is supported (as a shahid) by the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) found in al-Bukhari (6522) and Muslim (2861), in which the wording is: "And the fire will gather the rest of them; it will take its midday rest with them where they take their midday rest, spend the night where they spend the night, be with them in the morning where they are in the morning, and be with them in the evening where they are in the evening."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Also the hadith of Abu Sarihah Hudhayfah bin Asid found in the Musnad of Ahmad (26/ 16143) and elsewhere, in which is: "And a fire will come out from the depths of 'Adan that will drive the people (make them move on); wherever they halt, the fire will halt with them, and wherever they take their midday rest, the fire will stop there too." Its meaning is also found in "Sahih Muslim" (2901).
