حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا بحر بن نصر، حدثنا عبد الله بن وهب، أخبرني عمرو بن الحارث، عن دَرَّاج، عن ابن حُجَيرة، عن أبي هريرة، عن رسول الله ﷺ قال: "سيأتي على أمتي الزمانُ يَكثُر القراء ويقل الفقهاء، ويُقبَض العِلمُ، ويَكثُر الهَرْجُ" قالوا: وما الهرجُ يا رسول الله؟ قال: "القتل بينكم. ثم يأتي بعد ذلك زمانٌ يَقرأُ القرآنَ رجال لا يجاوز تَراقِيَهم، ثم يأتي بعد ذلك زمانٌ يجادل المنافق الكافر المشرك بالله المؤمنَ بمِثْل ما يقول" (1).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A time will come upon my Ummah in which the reciters (of the Qur'an) will be many while the jurists (those with deep understanding of the religion) will be few; knowledge will be taken away and harj will become widespread." The Companions asked: "O Messenger of Allah! What is harj?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Killing among yourselves. Then after that a time will come in which people will recite the Qur'an but it will not go beyond their throats. Then after that an era will come in which the hypocrite, the disbeliever and the one who associates partners with Allah will dispute with the believer using the very same kind of words that the believer (apparently) says."
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) إسناده ضعيف لتفرد درّاج أبي السَّمح فيه بزيادات لم تأتِ فيما صحَّ عن أبي هريرة، ودراج إنما يعتبر به في المتابعات والشواهد، فإذا انفرد ضُعِّف. ابن حجيرة: هو عبد الرحمن بن حجيرة الخولاني.
Grading: Its chain is "weak" because "Darraj Abu al-Samh" is alone in it with additions that do not appear in the authentically established narrations from Abu Hurayrah; Darraj is taken into consideration only in corroborations and supporting reports, and when he is alone he is judged weak.
Note / Clarification: Ibn Hujayrah is "Abd al-Rahman bin Hujayrah al-Khawlani".
وأخرجه ابن عبد البر في "جامع بيان العلم وفضله" (1043) من طريق حرملة بن يحيى، عن عبد الله بن وهب، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Abd al-Barr in "Jami' Bayan al-Ilm wa Fadlih" (1043) via Harmalah bin Yahya from Abd Allah bin Wahb, with this same chain.
وأخرجه الطبراني في "الأوسط" (3277) من طريق عبد الله بن لهيعة، عن دراج، به.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani also narrated it in "al-Awsat" (3277) via Abd Allah bin Lahi'ah from Darraj, in the same way.
والحديث إلى قوله: "القتل بينكم" قد روي نحوه من غير وجه صحيح عن أبي هريرة عند أحمد 12 / (7186) و (7488) و (7549) و 15 / (9527) و 16 / (10792) و (10863)، والبخاري (85) و (1036)، ومسلم (2672) (11) و (2888) (18)، وأبي داود (4255)، وابن ماجه (4052)، وابن حبان (6711) و (6718).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The hadith up to his words "killing among you" has been narrated with a similar meaning from Abu Hurayrah through other sound chains.
