It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Beware of tribulations! Let no one stand up to confront them, for by Allah, whoever stands up to them, they will sweep him away just as a flood sweeps away dung (or a heap of rubbish). These tribulations are ambiguous when they approach, so much so that the ignorant person cries out: 'This resembles (the truth)', and when they depart they make the reality clear. So when you see them, crouch in your houses, break your swords, cut your bowstrings, and cover your faces."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: It is like this in the manuscripts and al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis", whereas "Jami' Ma'mar" and some of the sources of the takhrij have the words "hadhihi sunnah" (this is a pattern/way), and this seems closer to what is correct, and Allah knows best. The Indian edition of "al-Mustadrak" has "hadhihi tushbih" (this resembles).
Grading: This chain can possibly be graded hasan. Technical note / Defect ('illah): No one narrated from Umarah bin Abd except Abu Ishaq (Amr bin Abd Allah al-Sabi'i), and Abu Hatim al-Razi said: He is majhul and not to be used as proof. So he said; but this Umarah is a Tabi'i who narrated from Hudhayfah and Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both); al-Ijli and Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah, and al-Juzajani transmitted from Ahmad bin Hanbal (as in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" 6/ 367) that he said: He is "mustaqim al-hadith" (sound in hadith). So one like him can possibly be graded hasan, if Allah wills. 1/ 273 - 274. Reference / Source: This report is in "Jami' Ma'mar" (20740), and via Abd al-Razzaq from Ma'mar it was narrated by Nu'aym bin Hammad in "al-Fitan" (343) and (472), by Ibn Battah in "al-Ibanah al-Kubra" 2/ 593 - 594, and by Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" 1/ 273 - 274. Note / Clarification: The meaning of Hudhayfah's (may Allah be pleased with him) words (as Ibn al-Athir said in "al-Nihayah fi Gharib al-Hadith wa al-Athar" under the root (sh-b-h)) is: When the fitnah approaches, it becomes confusing to the people (it looks like the truth) and shows them that they are upon the truth, until they enter into it and commit what is not permissible; then when it turns away and comes to an end, its reality becomes clear, and whoever entered into it knows that he was in error.
