Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8585

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best of people in times of tribulation is a man who holds the reins of his horse (or he said: its rope), pursuing the enemies of Allah, he frightening them and they frightening him; or a man who withdraws into seclusion in his settlement (in the countryside) and fulfils the right of Allah that is due from him."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but the two Shaykhs did not record it in their books.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The leaves from this hadith up to hadith (8656) are missing from manuscript (Z).

Note / Clarification: It is like this in al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis", and this agrees with the sources of the takhrij, whereas the manuscripts (K), (M) and (B) have the words "wa la yukhifunahu" (and they do not frighten him).

Grading: The hadith is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is no harm in the narrators of this chain, but an error in its chain is feared, because here it is narrated as "connected" with mention of Ibn Abbas, and likewise in what will come under number (8639) via Yahya bin Ja'far from Abd al-Razzaq, whereas in "Jami' Ma'mar" (20760) it is narrated from Tawus as "mursal", without mention of Ibn Abbas.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak narrated it from Ma'mar as "mursal", as with Nu'aym bin Hammad in "al-Fitan" (219), (511) and (730), and with Abu Amr al-Dani in "al-Sunan al-Waridah fi al-Fitan" (157).
Details of the narration: Layth bin Abi Sulaym narrated it from Tawus, from Umm Malik al-Bahziyyah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Reference / Source: Ahmad 45/ (27353) narrated it via Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad from Layth, and al-Tirmidhi (2177) via Muhammad bin Juhadah from an unnamed man from Tawus.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): And Layth bin Abi Sulaym has a poor memory.
Note / Clarification: Its meaning has also been reported from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) through two other routes, so see what has passed under number (2409).
