Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8575

It is narrated from Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: It was said to Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him): "Will you not fight? You are one of the members of the Shura, and you are more entitled to this matter (the caliphate) than others." He said: "I will not fight until you bring me a sword that has two eyes, a tongue and two lips, which can distinguish the disbeliever from the believer. I have fought in jihad and I know what jihad is, and I will not destroy myself if someone else is better than me."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts it reads "in kana rajulan khayr" (with "khayr" in the nominative), whereas the standard form is what we have established (i.e. "khayran" in the accusative), and it is the same in "Jami' Ma'mar".

Grading: Its narrators are, on the whole, thiqah, but Ibn Sirin did not meet Sa'd.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Indeed, Ibn Sirin himself says in the narration of Isma'il Ibn Ulayyah (as in Ibn Sa'd: 3/ 133, Nu'aym bin Hammad: 432, Ibn al-A'rabi: 538, and Ibn Asakir: 20/ 355): "I was informed that Sa'd used to say..."
Reference / Source: This report is in "Jami' Ma'mar" (20736), and through his route al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Kabir" (322), and from him Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" 1/ 94.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Nu'aym bin Hammad (419) narrated something similar from Hushaym, from Yunus bin Ubayd, from Humayd bin Hilal, who said: "It was said to Sa'd..." and he mentioned it. Its narrators are thiqah, but we do not think that Humayd met Sa'd either.
Note / Clarification: See the narration of Umar bin Sa'd from his father in Ahmad 3/ (1529).
