It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that, mentioning tribulation, he said: "Indeed, a man leaves his house with his religion with him, then he returns with nothing of his religion remaining with him. He goes to a (worldly) person who has no power to bring benefit or harm either to him or to himself, and swears by Allah before him saying: You are such and such, and such and such (flattering him). So he does not fulfil any of his need, yet he returns having made Allah angry with him."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The text established from manuscript (K) is this, while in the other manuscripts the word is "أرومة", and the discussion of it has already passed under hadith number (8499), that he is not known.
Grading: This report is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrators are on the whole trustworthy and well known except Muhammad bin Ibrahim, since he is not known, as has passed; but he is not alone in this narration. (1487). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Thus Abdullah bin al-Mubarak narrated this report from Sufyan (who is Sufyan al-Thawri) in "al-Zuhd" (382). Likewise, Qabisah bin Uqbah narrated it from Sufyan in Hannad bin al-Sari's "al-Zuhd" (1153), Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (8562), and Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi and Waki' in Abu Bakr al-Khallal's "al-Sunnah" (1487). Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Umar al-Adani recorded it in "al-Iman" (47), Abdullah bin Ahmad in "al-Sunnah" (824), al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (5/128), al-Khallal at (1549) and (1550), Ja'far al-Firyabi in "Sifat al-Nifaq wa Dhamm al-Munafiqin" (104), al-Tabarani at (8563), and Ibn Battah in "al-Ibanah" (2/748), through several routes from Qays bin Muslim, likewise. Note / Clarification: His words "ما حَلِي" mean: no good came to him or fell to his lot; in Arabic one says "حَلِي" and "حَلَا" just as one says "رَضِيَ" and "دَعَا".
