Book of Leading the Prayer and Congregational Prayer
نَهَى النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ - أَنْ يَقُومَ الْإِمَامُ فَوْقُ وَيَبْقَى النَّاسُ خَلْفَهُ
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the imam to stand on a higher place with the people behind him below

حدَّثَناه أبو بكر بن إسحاق، حدثنا محمد بن غالب، حدثنا زكريا بن يحيى، حدثنا زياد بن عبد الله، عن الأعمش، عن إبراهيم، عن همَّام قال: صلَّى حذيفةُ بالناس بالمدائن فتقدَّم فوقَ دكَّانٍ، فأخذ أبو مسعود بمَجامِع ثيابِه فمَدَّه، فَرَجَعَ، فلما قَضَى الصلاةَ قال له أبو مسعود: ألم تَعلَمْ أنَّ رسول الله ﷺ نَهَى أن يقومَ الإمامُ فوقُ ويبقى الناسُ خلفَه؟ قال: فلَمْ تَرَني أجبتُك حين مَدَدتَني؟ (1)
Hammam narrates that Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) led the people in prayer at al-Mada'in standing on a raised platform, so Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) took hold of his clothes and pulled him down, whereupon he stepped back. When the prayer was completed, Abu Mas'ud said: "Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that the imam should stand in a raised place while the people are behind him (in a lower place)?" Hudhayfah said: "Did you not see that when you pulled me, I complied with you?"
