Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8538

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: "Indeed, tribulations have times of pausing (lulls) and times of rising (flaring up). So whoever among you is able to die during the time of their pause (calm), let him do so."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but the two Shaykhs did not record it in their books.

Note / Clarification: In the handwritten manuscripts the name here occurs as "أرومة", as it also did in the earlier hadith number (8499); see our annotation on it there.

Grading: This report (text) is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although "Muhammad bin Ibrahim" is not known, he has a mutaba'ah (corroboration). "Sufyan" is Sufyan al-Thawri.
Note / Clarification: This narration will come again, repeated, at number (8641), and there is an addition at its beginning there.
Note / Clarification: This narration will also come ahead with the author at number (8737) by way of Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi from Sufyan al-Thawri.
Grading: And this chain (i.e. the one of Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi) is sahih.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah recorded it in "al-Musannaf" (15/10, 88), Nu'aym bin Hammad in "al-Fitan" (163), Abu Amr al-Dani in "al-Sunan al-Waridah fi al-Fitan" (180), Ibn al-Bakhtari in "Fawa'id" (563) and Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/274), through various routes from Sulayman al-A'mash, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: The explanation of "waqafat" and "ba'athat" will come ahead with the author in hadith number (8737), in the narration of Sufyan from al-Harith bin Hasirah from Zayd from Hudhayfah, in which it says: Hudhayfah was asked: What are its "waqafat" (pauses)? He said: "When the sword is sheathed." He was asked: What are its "ba'athat" (outbreaks)? He said: "When the sword is drawn."
General principle: "Al-ba'athat": as Ibn al-Athir says in "al-Nihayah", it means stirrings-up and incitements (of turmoil); it is the plural of "ba'thah", which is a single instance of "ba'th", and whatever you stir up or set in motion, you have "ba'ath"-ed it (roused it).
