Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8537

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Subay' bin Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: At the time of the conquest of Tustar I went to Kufah to bring mules. I entered the mosque and there was a group of people who, when you saw them, could be recognised as people of the Hijaz. I asked: Who is this? The people stared at me and said: Do you not know him? This is the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said (narrating): People used to ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about good, and I used to ask him (peace and blessings be upon him) about evil. He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah! After this good which Allah has granted us, will there again be evil as there was before it? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." I said: What is the way of protection from it? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The sword." I said: Will anything remain after the sword? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." I said: Then what will happen? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then there will be hudnah 'ala dakhan (a truce resting on smoke), that is, a single body will be formed despite discord. If on that day there is a khalifah (ruler) of Allah on the earth who strikes your back and seizes your wealth, even then listen to him and obey (to avoid tribulation); otherwise embrace death while biting firmly on the root of a tree." I said: Then what will happen? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then the Dajjal will emerge, and with him will be a river and a fire. Whoever falls into his fire, his reward (with Allah) becomes due and his sins fall away; and whoever falls into his river, his sin becomes established and his reward is lost." I said: Then what will happen? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then only the establishment of the Hour will remain."
