Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8521

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning this statement of Allah Almighty: "And We will surely let them taste the nearer punishment short of the greater punishment" [Surah al-Sajdah: 21]; he said: (The nearer punishment means) the calamities of this world: the Romans (the war with them), the severe seizure (al-batshah) and the smoke. (The narrator) said: Then he remained silent for a little while and said: That (the greater punishment) is the Dajjal.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. I asked Abu Ali al-Hafiz about this Azrah (in the chain), and he said: He is Azrah bin Yahya, whereas Shu'bah has narrated from Qatadah from Azrah bin Tamim.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
(3) إسناده صحيح. عزرة: هو ابن عبد الرحمن الخزاعي، وليس كما ذهب إليه أبو علي الحافظ شيخ المصنف من أنه عزرة بن يحيى، فإنَّ عزرة بن يحيى وإن روى عنه قتادة أيضًا إلا أنه لا تعرف له رواية عن الحسن بن عبد الله العُرني.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator "Azrah" is "Ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Khuza'i". He is not "Azrah bin Yahya" as Abu Ali al-Hafiz, the shaykh of the author (al-Hakim), thought; because although Qatadah also narrates from "Azrah bin Yahya", no narration of Azrah bin Yahya from "al-Hasan bin Abdullah al-Urani" is known.
Reference / Source: Imam Muslim (2799) recorded it by way of Muhammad bin Ja'far, and Abdullah bin Ahmad in his additions to "al-Musnad" (35/21173) by way of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan; both of them narrate it from Shu'bah with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Neither of them mentioned "the Dajjal" in it; rather, in Muslim the wording is: "the seizure (al-batshah) or the smoke (al-dukhan)" (here the doubt is from the narrator Shu'bah). And Yahya al-Qattan mentioned "al-lizam" in place of "the Romans". Hence al-Hakim's including this hadith as a supplement (istidrak) is an oversight on his part, because this hadith is recorded in Muslim's "Sahih".
قوله: "ثم انقطع شيئًا" يريد أحد الرواة، يعني: سكت شيئًا، وقد كتبت "شيئًا" في النسخ الخطيّة بلا ألف على صورة المرفوع، وقد سبق مرارًا التنبيه على أنَّ بعض النساخ كان يكتب المنصوب بحذف الألف على لغة ربيعة وغنم.
General principle: The phrase "ثم انقطع شيئًا" means one of the narrators saying that "he (while narrating) remained silent for a little while". In the handwritten manuscripts the word "شيئًا" is written without the alif (in the form of the nominative). It has been pointed out repeatedly that some copyists, following the dialect of the Rabi'ah and Ghanm tribes, would write even an accusative word with the alif dropped.
