Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8520

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mihjan bin al-Adra' (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me on some errand, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) met me on one of the roads of Madinah. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) climbed Uhud (mountain) and I climbed with him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face towards Madinah and said something about it (the city), then said: "May your mother perish (or: may its mother perish) - it is a town whose inhabitants will leave it (deserted) when it is at the peak of its lushness and ripening fruit; the birds and beasts of prey will eat its fruits - and the Dajjal will not be able to enter it, if Allah wills. Whenever he intends to enter it, an angel holding a drawn sword will confront him at every one of its roads and will prevent him from it."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this word is distorted into "قافية", in manuscript (K) into "كائفة", and in manuscript (M) it is written "كائنة". The word we have established in the text is taken from al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis", and it is the correct one.

Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to other routes). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrators are trustworthy, except that this chain is "munqati'" (broken) between Abdullah bin Shaqiq and Mihjan, because between the two of them is the intermediary "Raja' bin Abi Raja' al-Bahili". No one other than Abdullah bin Shaqiq narrated from this Raja', and his being declared trustworthy is not reported from anyone other than al-Ijli and Ibn Hibban.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (33/20347) narrated it from Muhammad bin Ja'far and Yazid bin Harun with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad also recorded it (20348) by way of Shu'bah, and (20349) by way of Abu Awanah; both of them (Shu'bah and Abu Awanah) narrate it from Abu Bishr Ja'far bin Iyas, from Abdullah bin Shaqiq, from Raja' bin Abi Raja', from Mihjan bin al-Adra'.

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The story of the abandoning of Madinah when its fruits ripen is supported (a shahid) by the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that has already passed at number (8516), and it is in the "Sahihayn" (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The story of the angels guarding the "anqab" of Madinah (i.e. its routes/outskirts) is supported by the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (al-Bukhari 1880, Muslim 1379) and the hadith of Anas (al-Bukhari 1881, Muslim 2943).
