Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8506

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: We were discussing the conquest of Constantinople and Rumiyah, that they would be conquered. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As sent for a chest and opened it, and then said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), writing (hadith), when a man asked: O Messenger of Allah, which of the two cities will be conquered first? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The city of Heraclius," meaning Constantinople.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The (name) occurs thus in the manuscripts, although no narration of Sa'id bin Abi Ayyub from "Abu Qabil" is known, nor any narration from him by Sa'id bin 'Ufayr (that is, Sa'id bin Kathir bin 'Ufayr). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The correct view is that this narrator is "Yahya bin Ayyub", as found in the sources of takhrij, and he is (Yahya) al-Ghafiqi.

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name has been corrupted into "Abi Fuhayd". The correction was made from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis" and "Ithaf al-Maharah" (11651).

Grading: Its chain is soft (weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The cause of the weakness is the narrator, correctly identified as "Yahya bin Ayyub" (al-Ghafiqi al-Misri); he is saduq, but there is disagreement over his trustworthiness and there was something (deficient) in his memory. Some declared him munkar al-hadith and said that strange (gharib) narrations occur in his hadith. Since he is alone in narrating this report, his solitary narration is a cause for concern (lest there be an error). And Allah knows best. Details of the narration: Yahya bin Ayyub was contradicted by "'Abd Allah bin Lahi'ah", as recorded by Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam in "Futuh Misr" (p. 431) and Nu'aym bin Hammad in "al-Fitan" (1337, 1354). He narrated it from Abu Qabil, from 'Umayr bin Malik, that "he was with 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr", and thus mentioned it as "mawquf" on 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr, not "marfu'" to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Important point: Ibn Lahi'ah had a poor memory, and 'Umayr bin Malik is an unknown (majhul) man; it is not known who he is.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for the narrator "Abu Qabil" (whose name is Huyayy bin Hani' al-Ma'afiri al-Misri), a group declared him trustworthy and Abu Hatim called him "salih al-hadith". Hafiz Ibn Hajar was overly severe concerning him in "Ta'jil al-Manfa'ah" (in the biography of 'Ubayd bin Abi Qurrah) and declared him weak, giving as the reason that "he used to quote a great deal from the old books!"
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator "Hashim bin Marthad" was declared thiqah by al-Khalili in "al-Irshad" (2/ 484). As for the statement that al-Dhahabi quoted in his books in the biography of Hashim, and in which Ibn Hajar followed him in "al-Lisan", that Ibn Hibban said about Hashim: "laysa bi-shay'" (he is nothing), this is an oversight by al-Dhahabi (may Allah have mercy on him). For Ibn Hibban did not give Hashim a biography at all in either of his two books "al-Thiqat" and "al-Majruhin". Ibn Hibban actually said this about "al-Walid bin Salamah al-Tabarani"; in the biography of his son Ibrahim bin al-Walid in "al-Thiqat" (8/ 84) he writes: "Sa'id bin Hashim bin Marthad narrated to us from him (Ibrahim) in Tiberias; his hadith is taken into consideration except for what he narrates from his father, because his father is nothing in hadith." So al-Dhahabi was mistaken and thought that this statement was about Sa'id bin Hashim bin Marthad (and his father)! Reference / Source: Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam narrated this hadith in "Futuh Misr" (p. 431) from Sa'id bin 'Ufayr, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: And there (with Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam) the narrator's name is "Yahya bin Ayyub", which is correct.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (11/ 224), Ahmad (11/ 6645), al-Darimi (503), Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Awa'il" (110), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (14749) and "al-Awa'il" (61), al-Mustaghfiri in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (194), and Abu 'Amr al-Dani in "al-Sunan al-Waridah fi al-Fitan" (607) narrated it through two routes from Yahya bin Ayyub al-Ghafiqi, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: This hadith will come later at numbers (8761) and (8875) through the route of Ibn Wahb from Yahya bin Ayyub. See also number (8698).
Note / Clarification: The word "Rumiyah" (with a dammah on the ra' and without doubling the ya') is the present-day city of "Rome", the capital of Italy.
