Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8504

Khalid bin Ma'dan narrates from Jubayr bin Nufayr that he said: Take us to Sayyiduna Dhu Mikhmar (may Allah be pleased with him), the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The Romans will make a secure peace with you, then you and they together will fight an enemy; you will be granted victory, you will remain safe and you will be granted conquest. Then you will return to a meadow (marj), and there a man from among the Christians will raise the cross. At this a Muslim man will become angry, advance towards them and break the cross. At that point the Romans will become enraged and will gather for the great battle (al-malhamah)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, and it is more worthy (better) than the first narration.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts the words are "fa-qala haddathana", but what we have written (in the text) is more fitting. In al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak" it is likewise, but as "fa-haddathana" (with fa'), and the word "qala" is not mentioned there. And the one saying "fa-haddathana" here is Hassan bin 'Atiyyah.

Note / Clarification: In our manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "'Adan"!

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it at (28/ 16825) from Rawh bin 'Ubadah and at (16826) from Muhammad bin Mus'ab al-Qarqasani; Abu Dawud (2767, 4292) and Ibn Majah (4089) through the route of 'Isa bin Yunus; and Ibn Majah (4089 M) and Ibn Hibban (6708, 6709) through the route of al-Walid bin Muslim. All four of them narrate it from al-Awza'i with this same chain, except that Rawh bin 'Ubadah dropped "Jubayr bin Nufayr" from the chain, and al-Qarqasani and al-Walid bin Muslim added at its end the story of the eighty banners (ghayah), like the earlier narration of Muhammad bin Kathir. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This story is supported (as a shahid) by the hadith of 'Awf bin Malik that has passed with the author at number (8500).
