It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) suffered from an eye inflammation, or one of his family or Companions did, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would supplicate with these words: 'Allahumma matti'ni bi-basari waj'alhu al-waritha minni, wa arini fil-'aduwwi tha'ri, wansurni 'ala man zalamani' (O Allah, let me enjoy my eyesight and make it my heir (that is, keep it sound until my death), show me my revenge upon the enemy, and help me against whoever has wronged me).

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (K) and (M) it is "bi-ha'ula'i al-da'awat".
Grading: Its chain is very weak because of Yusuf bin 'Atiyyah, for he is "matruk al-hadith", and Yazid al-Raqashi (who is Ibn Aban) is weak, and because of these two al-Dhahabi declared it defective in "al-Talkhis". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ibn al-Sunni narrated it in "'Amal al-Yawm wa al-Laylah" (565) through Muhammad bin Yahya bin al-Fayyad, from Yusuf bin 'Atiyyah, with this same chain. (1939). Important point: This supplication is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) through other chains in which there is no mention of "ramad" (eye pain); see what has passed with the author (al-Hakim) at number (1939).
