Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts it is thus: "aw dam yarqa'", and al-'Azimabadi in "'Awn al-Ma'bud Sharh Sunan Abi Dawud" quoted al-Sindi as saying that "yarqa'" is the answer to an implied question, as if it were asked: What happens after the ruqyah? And the answer was given that the blood stops (yarqa' al-dam), that is: it ceases.
Grading: The hadith is sahih except for the words "aw dam yarqa'", because in the hadith of 'Amir al-Sha'bi Sharik (who is Ibn 'Abd Allah al-Nakha'i) is alone in narrating them, and his memory is poor (su' al-hifz); he was inconsistent (idtirab) in narrating the hadith as mawsul and as mursal, and he was contradicted regarding the hadith being from Anas bin Malik; so his narration is "shadh".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Kabir" (733) and al-Daraqutni in "al-'Ilal" 12/ 110 through two routes from Muhammad bin Sa'id al-Asbahani, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: In both of their versions the name "Sharik" is missing from the chain, and most likely this (error) comes from the copies.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Abu Dawud (3889) narrated it through the route of Sulayman bin Dawud al-'Ataki and Yazid bin Harun, both from Sharik, with the same chain; the first narrated it as "mursal" by dropping Anas from it, and the second narrated it as "mawsul". 'Ali bin al-Ja'd also narrated it from Sharik as "mursal", as found in Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi's "al-Ja'diyyat" (2397), and likewise 'Amr bin 'Awn, as found in Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-'Ilal" (2566).
Details of the narration: Like Sharik's narration (which mentions the blood), Yahya bin Zakariyya bin Abi Za'idah narrated it from Mujalid bin Sa'id, from al-Sha'bi, from Jabir; Ibn 'Abd al-Barr recorded it in "al-Tamhid" 23/ 158.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (But) Mujalid is not strong, and moreover Yahya bin Abi Za'idah was contradicted in his narration from him, for three thiqah narrators narrated it from Mujalid, as found with Ibn Abi Shaybah 8/ 35, al-Bazzar (3056 - Kashf al-Astar), and al-Quda'i in "Musnad al-Shihab" (851), and they did not mention the blood in it.
Details of the narration: Abu Usamah, narrating from Mujalid as found with Ibn Abi Shaybah, made it a hadith of al-Sha'bi from "one of the Companions" of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), without naming him.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The chain of this hadith has been narrated from al-Sha'bi with differences in several ways, which al-Daraqutni mentioned in "al-'Ilal" (2490), calling it "mudtarib". Hafiz Ibn Hajar mentioned some of these differences in "Fath al-Bari" 17/ 461-462 and said: "The verified view is that al-Sha'bi had this hadith from both 'Imran bin Husayn and Buraydah."
Important point: See the hadith of al-Sha'bi from 'Imran in "Musnad Ahmad" 33/ (19908), whose chain is sahih.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And it is authentically established (sahih) through the hadith of Yusuf bin 'Abd Allah bin al-Harith from Anas bin Malik, in Muslim (2196) and elsewhere, that: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted ruqyah for the evil eye, for venomous stings, and for namlah (skin sores)."
Note / Clarification: "al-humah": the venom/sting of venomous creatures (such as the scorpion). "al-namlah": sores/pustules that come out on the side (or flank).
