Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 844

Sayyiduna Sabrah bin Ma'bad (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Each one of you should make a sutrah (barrier) for his prayer, even if it is only with an arrow."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (4) This chain is apparently munqati' or mursal, because Abd al-Aziz narrates only from his father al-Rabi', and al-Rabi' is a Tabi'i.
Important point: In the narration of al-Bayhaqi (2/270) there is the addition "haddathani ammi" (my paternal uncle narrated to me), which makes the chain connected (that is, Abd al-Malik bin al-Rabi' from his father, from his grandfather Sabrah bin Ma'bad). Yahya bin Ma'in declared Abd al-Malik weak, while al-Ijli and al-Dhahabi declared him trustworthy; so he is acceptable in corroborations, but weak when he narrates alone.

Grading: (5) Due to the details above, this chain has some weakness (lin).
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani (6540), al-Bayhaqi (2/270) and al-Baghawi narrated it by the chain of Harmalah bin Abd al-Aziz from his uncle Abd al-Malik. Imam al-Baghawi called it "hasan".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that a short spear (harbah) would be planted for him and he would pray towards it (al-Bukhari 498, Muslim 501).
