حدثنا (1) أبو عبد الله محمد بن يعقوب الحافظ، حدثنا إبراهيم بن عبد الله، حدثنا محمد بن القاسم الأَسَدي، حدثني ثَوْر بن يزيد، عن يزيد بن يزيد بن جابر، عن مكحول، عن يزيد بن جابر (2)، عن أبي هريرة، عن النبي ﷺ قال: "يُجزِئُ من السُّتْرة مثلُ مُؤْخِرةِ الرَّحْل ولو بدِقَّةِ شَعرةٍ" (3).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين! ولم يُخرجاه مفسَّرًا بذِكْر دِقَّة الشَّعر.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "For a sutrah, something equal to the back post of a camel saddle suffices, even if it is as thin as a hair."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with the detail about the thinness of a hair.

(1) زاد قبله في المطبوع: حدثني أبو الحسن محمد بن الحسن المنصوري، وهو إقحام لا يصح.
Technical note: (1) The printed edition adds "haddathani Abu al-Hasan" here, which is an incorrect insertion.
(2) تحرَّف في النسخ الخطية إلى: جارية، والصواب أنه جابر، فيزيد بن جابر هذا هو والد يزيد بن يزيد الراوي هنا عن مكحول، وكل من خرَّجه ذكره على الصواب، وانظر "تاريخ دمشق" لابن عساكر 65/ 135 و 137.
Technical note: (2) The manuscripts have "Jariyah"; the correct name is "Jabir". Yazid bin Jabir here is the father of Yazid bin Yazid, who narrates from Makhul.
(3) إسناده واهٍ، محمد بن القاسم الأسدي متروك، وكذَّبه أحمد والدارقطني.
Grading: (3) This chain is extremely weak (wahin), because Muhammad bin al-Qasim al-Asadi is "matruk", and Imam Ahmad and al-Daraqutni declared him a liar.
وأخرجه ابن خزيمة (808)، والطبراني في "مسند الشاميين" (496) و (3588)، وابن عدي في "الكامل" 6/ 249 - 250، وابن عساكر في "تاريخ دمشق" 65/ 135 من طريق محمد بن معمر، عن محمد بن القاسم الأسدي، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ibn Khuzaymah (808), al-Tabarani and Ibn Asakir narrated it by the chain of Muhammad bin Ma'mar from Muhammad bin al-Qasim, with this same chain.
وفي باب السُّترة مما يغني عن هذا الحديث حديث طلحة عند مسلم (499) رفعه: "إذا وضع أحدكم بين يديه مثل مؤخرة الرحل فليصلِّ، ولا يبالِ مَن مَرَّ وراء ذلك". وحديث عائشة عنده أيضًا (500) قالت: سئل رسول الله ﷺ عن سترة المصلِّي، فقال: "مثل مؤخرة الرحل".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On the subject of the sutrah, rather than this weak hadith, the marfu' hadith of Talhah (Muslim 499) suffices: "When one of you places in front of him a sutrah the size of the back post of a camel saddle, let him pray". The narration of A'ishah (Muslim 500) is similar.
