Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) Its chain is sahih. Technical note: Al-Ash'ath refers to Ibn Abd al-Malik al-Humrani, and Muhammad refers to Ibn Sirin. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (367, 645) narrated it from Ubayd Allah bin Mu'adh, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (2336) narrated it by the chain of Ubayd Allah bin Umar al-Qawariri from Mu'adh bin Mu'adh. Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (600) and al-Nasa'i narrated it by routes from al-Ash'ath, but in it the word "luhuf" (quilts) appears in place of "shu'ur" (garments). Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it by the route of Salamah bin Alqamah, and Abu Dawud (368) by the route of Hisham bin Hassan. Technical note: The narration of Salamah has "shu'ur" (garments), while the narration of Hisham has "luhuf" (quilts).
(Note / Clarification): "Shu'ur" (plural of shi'ar) is the garment that touches the body, and "luhuf" (plural of lihaf) is the wrap with which one covers oneself. Important point: He (peace and blessings be upon him) refrained from praying in them (those garments) out of concern that some trace of menstrual blood might have got on them. Caution: In the printed edition of Ibn Hibban (2330) the chain was changed to "Ubayd Allah bin Mu'adh from his father", which is an error; the correct version is what is in Ibn Hibban's original (al-Hubab, the father of Abu Khalifah). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hubab made two mistakes in this narration: first, he called al-Ash'ath bin Abd al-Malik (thiqah) al-Ash'ath bin Sawwar (da'if); second, contrary to the thiqah narrators, he said "yusalli" (he used to pray) in place of "la yusalli" (he did not pray).
