It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Qatadah al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) - who was a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) - he says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Allah Almighty created Adam, then created (all) the creation from his back, then said: 'These are for Paradise and I do not care (about anyone), and these are for Hell and I do not care (about anyone).'" Someone said: "O Messenger of Allah! Then why do we do (good) deeds?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In accordance with destiny (that is, what has been decreed is what will become manifest)."
This is a sahih (authentic) hadith; there is agreement on using all of its narrators up to the Companion as evidence. Abd al-Rahman bin Qatadah is a Companion from Banu Salimah. The two of them used as evidence (the narration of) Zuhayr bin Amr from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while he has no narrator other than Abu Uthman al-Nahdi; likewise, Imam Bukhari used as evidence the hadith of Abu Sa'id bin al-Mu'alla, who has no narrator other than Hafs bin Asim.

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscript (B) the word is distorted here, and "Sulaym" is written instead of "Sulayman".
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Some scholars tried to declare it defective (weak) because of "idtirab" (inconsistency), but this objection is not correct. Reference / Source: Imam Ibn Hibban narrated it at (338) by way of al-Harith bin Miskin, from Ibn Wahb, with this chain. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in his Musnad 29/(17660) by way of Layth bin Sa'd, from Mu'awiyah bin Salih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is an oversight (dhuhul) by Imam al-Hakim, because Rashid bin Sa'd, although thiqah, was not used as proof by either of the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim). As for Mu'awiyah bin Salih, he is one of Imam Muslim's narrators only.
Important point: Rather, this narration is among the hadiths that only Imam Muslim narrated (it is not in al-Bukhari).
