Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In the manuscripts the word "bin" is distorted into "'an".
Note / Clarification: (2) Manuscripts (Z) and (B) have "Bistban", (M) has "Bistnan", and the printed edition has "Shayban". The correction has been made from manuscript (K), the source works of the takhrij, and Ibn Hajar's "Ithaf al-Maharah".
Note / Clarification: (3) This is how it is in the manuscripts. Some source works of the takhrij have "Harthan", some "Jurban" and some "Khurban". Al-Shihab al-Khafaji held in his "Hashiyah on al-Baydawi" (5/155) that it is "Jariyyan", spelled it out letter by letter, and said: it is taken from the name of the collar of a shirt.
Note / Clarification: (4) In the manuscripts this is distorted into "al-Udan"; the correction has been made from all the other source works, and it is the same with al-Shihab al-Khafaji, who said: it is the dual of "amud" (pillar).
Note / Clarification: (5) Manuscript (B) has "al-Fuliq".
Note / Clarification: (6) The manuscripts have "al-Nasih", while we have established the reading from the source works of the takhrij; it is the same with al-Shihab, who said: it is what rises shortly before dawn.
Note / Clarification: (7) This is how it is in the manuscripts. Al-Shihab has "Dhu al-Katifayn", and he said it is the dual of "katif" (shoulder), and it is a large star. Then he said: these are stars that are not observed.
Note / Clarification: (8) In the manuscripts this is distorted in more than one way; the correction has been made from the source works of the takhrij.
Grading: (9) This hadith is "extremely weak (wahin)" and "munkar". With al-Hakim it occurs with this chain, and he is alone in mentioning "Asbat bin Nasr" in the chain, as though he followed the usual path (al-jaddah), since Asbat is the narrator of the tafsir from al-Suddi (Isma'il bin Abd al-Rahman). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Whereas what is known about this hadith is that it is from the narration of "al-Hakam bin Zuhayr", who narrates it from al-Suddi with this chain, and al-Hakam bin Zuhayr is "very weak". Ibn Ma'in said: he is nothing, and he said: he is not trustworthy. Al-Bukhari said: munkar al-hadith. Al-Nasa'i said: matruk al-hadith. Ibn Hibban said: he used to revile the Companions and narrate fabricated reports from trustworthy narrators. Al-Uqayli mentioned some hadiths in his biography, this one among them, and said: none of these texts is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) through an established chain. Al-Bazzar and al-Bayhaqi also pointed to al-Hakam bin Zuhayr being alone in narrating it. Ibn Kathir said in his Tafsir (4/298): al-Hakam bin Zuhayr al-Fazari is alone in narrating it; the imams declared him weak and most abandoned him; al-Juzajani said: he is worthless (saqit), and he is the narrator of the hadith of the stars of Yusuf (peace be upon him). Ibn Hibban said: this has no basis among the hadiths of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Sa'id bin Mansur in the Tafsir section of his "al-Sunan" (1111), al-Bazzar (2220 - Kashf al-Astar), al-Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (345), Ibn Hibban in "al-Majruhin" (1/250-251), al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/277), Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Mawdu'at" (302), and Abu Ya'la, as in Ibn Hajar's "al-Matalib al-Aliyah" (3635), via al-Hakam bin Zuhayr with this same chain.
Grading: Al-Bazzar said: we do not know it to be narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) through any chain other than this one; and al-Bayhaqi said: al-Hakam bin Zuhayr is alone in narrating it.
