Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8393

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I saw in a dream black sheep followed by white sheep. O Abu Bakr, interpret it." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, it refers to the Arabs who will follow you; then the non-Arabs will come after them until they fill it (with Islam). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is how the angel interpreted it at the time of sahar (before dawn)."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) The words "ghanaman sudan yatba'uha" are missing from manuscripts (Z) and (B).

Grading: (2) This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi"; the narrators of this chain are trustworthy, but there is disagreement about its chain.
Reference / Source: Muhammad bin Imran bin Abi Layla, who is saduq with no harm in him, narrated it, as recorded by Ibn Abi Khaythamah in the second volume of his "al-Tarikh" (3315), al-Dulabi in "al-Kuna" (46) and Abu Nu'aym in "Tarikh Asbahan" (1/10), from Muhammad bin Fudayl, from al-A'mash, from Amr bin Murrah, from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, from Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) himself. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yet Ibn Abi Layla did not meet Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) (so it is munqati').
Details of the narration: Two trustworthy narrators contradicted Ibn Fudayl in making (the chain) connected: Sufyan bin Uyaynah, in Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i's "al-Ghaylaniyyat" (31) and Abu Nu'aym's "Akhbar Asbahan" (1/10); and Abd Allah bin Idris, in Ibn Abi Shaybah (11/59). Both of them narrated it from Husayn (bin Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami), from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, i.e. as "mursal". Grading: Al-Daraqutni said in "al-Ilal" (80): this (the mursal narration) is the preserved one (mahfuz).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported (shahid) by the hadith of Amr bin Shurahbil in Abu Nu'aym (1/9) from one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abu Bakr, and he mentioned it. Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Grading: And another from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) with him (Abu Nu'aym) (1/10), but its chain contains an unknown narrator (jahalah).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In this chapter there is a narration from Abu al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him) in Ahmad (39/23801), but its chain is weak.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And from al-Nu'man bin Bashir and Jubayr bin Mut'im (may Allah be pleased with them) in Abu Nu'aym (1/9), but the chains of both are extremely weak.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And from Qatadah as "mursal", narrated by Ma'mar in his "Jami'" (19924).
