It is narrated from Sayyiduna Khuzaymah bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Any servant who commits something that Allah has forbidden, and then the prescribed punishment (hadd) for it is carried out on him, that punishment becomes an expiation for that sin of his."
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi", while this isnad is da'if (weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for the weakness is idtirab (inconsistency) and the fact that Ibn Khuzaymah is left unnamed; our strong impression is that he is Umarah bin Khuzaymah. Al-Bukhari said in "al-Tarikh al-Awsat" (2/ 939): No proof can be established by it. Al-Tirmidhi said in "al-'Ilal al-Kabir" (414): I asked Muhammad (al-Bukhari) about it, and he said: There is idtirab in this hadith, and he declared it "very weak". Usamah bin Zayd is "al-Laythi".
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Imam Ahmad (36/ 21866, 21876) from Rawh bin Ubadah, from Usamah bin Zayd, with this same isnad.
General principle: See the rest of its takhrij and the discussion of it there.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported (as a shahid) by the hadith of Ubadah bin al-Samit in al-Bukhari (18) and Muslim (1709), in which he said: "Whoever commits any of these (sins) and is punished for it in this world, that is an expiation for him; and whoever commits any of them and then Allah conceals it, his matter rests with Allah: if He wills He pardons him, and if He wills He punishes him." Also see number (3279).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The hadith of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), which passed earlier in this chapter as number (8364), also supports it.
