Book of Prescribed Punishments
أَفْضَلُ آيَةٍ فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَمَا أَصَابَكُمْ مِنْ مُصِيبَةٍ 8226 - أَخْبَرَنِي إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْفَقِيهُ بِالرَّيِّ ، ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْفَرَجِ ، ثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، ثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ - رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ - قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " مَنْ أَذْنَبَ ذَنْبًا فِي الدُّنْيَا فَسَتَرَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَفَا عَنْهُ فَاللَّهُ أَكْرَمُ مِنْ أَنْ يَرْجِعَ فِي شَيْءٍ قَدْ عَفَا عَنْهُ وَسَتَرَهُ ، وَمَنْ أَذْنَبَ ذَنْبًا فِي الدُّنْيَا فَعُوقِبَ عَلَيْهِ فَاللَّهُ أَعْدَلُ مِنْ أَنْ يُثَنِّيَ عُقُوبَتَهُ عَلَى عَبْدٍ مَرَّتَيْنِ "

حدَّثَناه الحسين بن علي التَّميمي، حدَّثنا عبد الله بن محمد محمد البَغَوي، حدَّثنا جدِّي، حدَّثنا مروان (2) بن معاوية، عن أزهَرَ بن راشد الكاهِلي [عن الخَضِر بن القَوّاس] (3) عن أبي سُخَيلةَ، قال: قال لنا أمير المؤمنين عليُّ بن أبي طالب: ألا أخبرُكم بأفضل آيةٍ في كتاب الله ﷿ أخبَرني بها نبيُّ الله ﷺ: ﴿وَمَا أَصَابَكُمْ مِنْ مُصِيبَةٍ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَيَعْفُو عَنْ كَثِيرٍ﴾ [الشورى: 30]، فالله أكرمُ من أن يُثنِّيَ عليهم العقوبةَ، وما عفا الله عنه في الدنيا فالله أكرمُ من أن يعودَ في عفوِه (4).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Shall I not tell you about the most excellent verse in the Book of Allah, which the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told me about? (It is this): "And whatever calamity befalls you is because of what your own hands have earned, and He pardons much." [Surah al-Shura: 30]. So Allah is far too generous to repeat the punishment upon them (in the Hereafter), and whatever Allah has pardoned in this world, Allah is far too generous to go back on His pardon.

Note / Clarification: (2) In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this name has been corrupted into "Thawr".
(3) سقط من نسخنا الخطية، وأثبتناه من مصادر التخريج.
Note / Clarification: (3) This was missing from our manuscripts; we have established it from the sources of the takhrij.
(4) إسناده ضعيف، الأزهر بن راشد الكاهلي ضعَّفه ابن معين، وقال أبو حاتم: مجهول، والخضر بن القواس وأبو سخيلة مجهولان. جدُّ عبد الله البغوي: هو أحمد بن مَنيع البغوي، جده لأمه.
Grading: (4) This isnad is da'if (weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Azhar bin Rashid al-Kahili was declared weak by Ibn Ma'in, and Abu Hatim called him majhul (unknown). Al-Khidr bin al-Qawwas and Abu Sukhaylah are also majhul. The grandfather of Abd Allah al-Baghawi is "Ahmad bin Mani' al-Baghawi", his maternal grandfather.
وأخرجه أحمد 2 / (649) عن مروان بن معاوية، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Imam Ahmad (2/ 649) from Marwan bin Mu'awiyah, with this same isnad.
