Book of Prescribed Punishments
أَفْضَلُ آيَةٍ فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَمَا أَصَابَكُمْ مِنْ مُصِيبَةٍ 8226 - أَخْبَرَنِي إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْفَقِيهُ بِالرَّيِّ ، ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْفَرَجِ ، ثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، ثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ - رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ - قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " مَنْ أَذْنَبَ ذَنْبًا فِي الدُّنْيَا فَسَتَرَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَفَا عَنْهُ فَاللَّهُ أَكْرَمُ مِنْ أَنْ يَرْجِعَ فِي شَيْءٍ قَدْ عَفَا عَنْهُ وَسَتَرَهُ ، وَمَنْ أَذْنَبَ ذَنْبًا فِي الدُّنْيَا فَعُوقِبَ عَلَيْهِ فَاللَّهُ أَعْدَلُ مِنْ أَنْ يُثَنِّيَ عُقُوبَتَهُ عَلَى عَبْدٍ مَرَّتَيْنِ "

أخبرني إسماعيل بن محمد بن إسماعيل الفقيه بالرَّي، حدَّثنا محمد بن الفَرَج، حدَّثنا حجَّاج بن محمد، حدَّثنا يونس بن أبي إسحاق، عن أبيه، عن أبي جُحَيفة، عن علي قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "مَن أذنبَ ذنبًا في الدنيا فسَتَرَه الله عليه وعَفَا عنه، فالله أكرمُ من أن يَرجعَ في شيء قد عَفَا عنه وسَتَره، ومَن أذنب ذنبًا في الدنيا فعُوقِبَ عليه، فالله أعدلُ من أن يُثنِّيَ عقوبتَه على عبدٍ مرَّتينِ" (1).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يخرجاه. وله شاهدٌ بزيادة ألفاظٍ وتلاوةٍ من القرآن فيه:

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever commits a sin in this world, and Allah conceals it for him and pardons him, then Allah is far too generous to go back (to punish) something He has already pardoned and concealed; and whoever commits a sin in this world and is punished for it, then Allah is far too just to punish His servant twice for it."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

(1) إسناده حسن من أجل يونس بن أبي إسحاق ومحمد بن الفرج - وهو أبو بكر الأزرق - وهذا الأخير قد توبع فيما سلف عند المصنف برقم (13). أبو إسحاق: هو عمرو بن عبد الله السَّبيعي، وأبو جُحيفة: هو وهب بن عبد الله السُّوَائي، وهو صحابي.
Grading: (1) This isnad is "hasan" because of Yunus bin Abi Ishaq and Muhammad bin al-Faraj (Abu Bakr al-Azraq). Muhammad bin al-Faraj has a corroboration, which passed earlier in the author (al-Hakim)'s work as number (13). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Ishaq is "Amr bin Abd Allah al-Sabi'i", and Abu Juhayfah is "Wahb bin Abd Allah al-Suwa'i", who is a Companion.
