Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this name has been corrupted into "Umar".
Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi", while this isnad is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Humayd — who has also been called Ju'ayd — the son of Safwan's sister: Simak bin Harb is alone in narrating from him, and no declaration of his reliability is reported from anyone other than Ibn Hibban; that is why Ibn al-Qattan said: He is "majhul al-hal" (of unknown condition).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Bukhari said in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" 4/ 304 after citing the hadith: We do not know of his having heard from Safwan.
Note / Clarification: Amr bin Talhah means: Amr bin Hammad bin Talhah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was recorded by Abu Dawud (4394) from Muhammad bin Yahya bin Faris, and by al-Nasa'i (7328) from Ahmad bin Uthman bin Hakim, both of them from Amr (bin Hammad) al-Qannad, with this same isnad. And it was recorded by Imam Ahmad 24/ (15310) and 45/ (27644) via Sulayman bin Qarm, from Simak bin Harb, in the same way.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Something similar was recorded by Imam Ahmad 24/ (15303) and 45/ (27637) via Muhammad bin Abi Hafsah, from al-Zuhri, from Safwan bin Abd Allah, from his father: that Safwan (the story of Safwan).
Grading: And Ibn Abi Hafsah is "layyin al-hadith" (a soft, weak narrator).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): He was contradicted by Malik, in Ibn Majah (2595): he narrated it from al-Zuhri, from Abd Allah bin Safwan, from his father Safwan.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was also recorded by Imam Ahmad 24/ (15305) and 45/ (27639) and al-Nasa'i (7324) via Ata' bin Abi Rabah, from Tariq bin Muraqqi', from Safwan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is "jahalah" (unknownness) in Ibn Muraqqi', because Ata' is alone in narrating from him, and no declaration of his reliability is established from anyone other than Ibn Hibban.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was also recorded by al-Nasa'i (7323) from Qatadah, from Ata', from Safwan bin Umayyah. He did not mention Tariq.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was also recorded by al-Nasa'i (7325) via al-Awza'i, from Ata' bin Abi Rabah: that a man stole a garment and was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); (this narration) is mursal, and he mentioned neither Tariq nor Safwan.
