Grading: The hadith is sahih, and this isnad is "hasan" because of Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad, and he has been corroborated.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was also narrated by Imam Ahmad 23/ (15247) from Sulayman bin Dawud al-Hashimi, with this same isnad.
Note / Clarification: Ibn Abi al-Zinad said: The stepsons raised by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were Salamah bin Abi Salamah and Umar bin Abi Salamah, and the woman sought protection with one of them.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was also narrated by Imam Ahmad (15149) via Ibn Lahi'ah, and by Muslim (1689) and al-Nasa'i (7337) via Ma'qil bin Ubayd Allah, both of them from Abu al-Zubayr, in the same way.
Details of the narration: In the narration of Ibn Lahi'ah: "She sought protection with Usamah bin Zayd, the beloved of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." While in the narration of Ma'qil bin Ubayd Allah: "She sought protection with Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her)."
General principle: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar commented on this disagreement in "Fath al-Bari" 21/ 480, saying: I have come across what indicates that it was Umar bin Abi Salamah: Abd al-Razzaq (18831) recorded from the mursal of al-Hasan bin Muhammad bin Ali, who said: A woman stole, and he mentioned the hadith, in which there is: Then Umar bin Abi Salamah came and said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): O father, she is my aunt. He said: "Even if it were Fatimah the daughter of Muhammad, I would cut off her hand." Amr bin Dinar, the narrator from al-Hasan, said: I had no doubt that she was the daughter of al-Aswad bin Abd al-Asad. I say: There is no contradiction between the two narrations from Jabir, for it is to be understood that she sought protection with Umm Salamah and with her children; she singled her out for that because she was her relative and her (Umm Salamah's) husband was her paternal uncle. Umar bin Abi Salamah only said "my aunt" on account of her age; otherwise she was the daughter of his paternal uncle, his father's brother … And in Abu al-Shaykh, via Ash'ath, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir: A woman of Banu Makhzum stole and sought protection with Usamah; it is as though she came with her people, and they spoke to Usamah after she had sought protection with Umm Salamah. And in the mursal of Habib bin Abi Thabit: They sought intercession with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) through more than one person, and they spoke to Usamah.
